Has anyone struggled to get smaller bins from the Council?
Council will not downsize my bins to the smaller size due to staff deeming them to be inadequate for my household of four’s waste disposal needs. This is based solely on the the number 4, no other information has been asked of me, such as age and demographic of the household. I challenged this and was fobbed off on the liaison service who were supposed to contact me. They didn’t bother with that and just emailed to say my case was closed.
I contacted our 3 ward councillors - Gina Adamou, Zena Brabazon, Sarah James - in October to intervene on my behalf but didn’t receive a response from any of them.
Speaking with neighbours, this issue of Haringey not allowing people to electively reduce their waste capacity, and the lack of transparency on the rationale or understanding of my requirements, predates the pandemic.
I guess I will just tell them my household has reduced to two occupants (assuming that’s the magic number) but I shouldn’t have to resort to that tactic considering generating less waste is widely accepted as desirable. Why are there barriers to make this difficult?

Sounds very similar to our experience in 2016. We were a household of 4 then (2 children) and now there a 5 of us and still have spare capacity each week/fortnight with our small bins. We escalated to John Forde, Neighbourhood Action Officer. Unfortunately John doesn’t work at the council anymore and I don’t think the position exists. Perhaps raise to the relevant cabinet member?
Pretty bad not to have received any response from the councillors. (Doesn’t sound like Zena)
Try officer, David Shipp.
Yeah I thought it was poor form of the councillors too, but I assumed they didn’t respond because the policy is essentially indefensible. But who knows?
Thanks for David’s name - will contact him.
Another thing wort trying as a first resort is @ContactHaringey. They seem to be very responsive.
Believe there is a issue over small bins not fitting Dustcart loader
Recycling crew look in bins, if in a bag they pull out bag and not empty bin
Re Councillors, seems general practice for them these days
Will be interesting to see this years Expenses claims
I’ve been watching my small bins being emptied for the past 9 months - that’s not true at all.
Was not saying it was a reason, but a possibility
So what size is your Wheelie Waste Bin ?
Standard Domestic are 360 Litre
Believe you will find they will Only service bins that they supply. In General cases
But sure someone will have got theirs serviced
Not forgetting that Registered HMO's get issued more bins
Our small green-top recycling bin has never been refused for mechanised tipping in the years we've had it (we chose the size at the green bin rollout, rather than changing later as Bella wants to do).
No issue here Bob - it fits fine on the wagon every Wednesday.
Footnote to others: we got a *free* same-size replacement (took a bit of discussion over the phone with Veolia and this was pre-pandemic) when the original lost its wheels through rough handling.
I wonder if you could buy your own bins online. I considered this when I needed a replacement during lockdown but Haringey came through in the end.
Are these the ones you're after?

It would be wise to check it matches the size of the smaller bins so it will work with the lorries.
Also you'd have to persuade the council to pick up your old ones or sell them.
Just an idea.
