Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi, Just wanted to highlight United Haitians a charity based in Tottenham.  They are looking for donations of clothing, shoes, candles, blankets, sleeping bags, medical supplies etc. With a collection point at The Chestnuts Community Centre on St Ann's Road, N15.  More details on their website www.uhuk.org

With respect, is this charity 'real' ?
yes it is. if you would like to help the community from a grassroots basis donate to them. If you would like to help the international agencies relief efforts donate to the DEC.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I can find no charity of this name registered with the Charities Commission. There is also no reference to a Charities Commission registration number on the organisation's website. I mean no disrespect to the organisations members or their intentions but one can't simply call oneself a charity.
If you want to help you need some credibility. There are so many scams and acts of 'charity vandalism' that wreck any human response with giving.
James, I have to agree with you on this reluctantly. Even some duly registered charities' collectors have deals such that they get a significant percentage of whatever they collect. Some charity workers are not doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.

United Haitians is a clever name. I for one know nothing about them but they are likely to be motivated by the best of intentions.

However the advice I've heard, at least for the short-term rescue effort (and it makes sense to me) is to make donations of cash (not goods) to the well known Charities like the Red Cross etc. Other forms of giving may take too long to arrive.
Chris. Thanks i agree. I used to work for NGO suppliers.
This buisiness is such a cliche.
On a slightly different tack, I have been appalled at the explosives dowsing fraud uncovered by the BBC, whereby a British Company has been selling bomb detectors to the Iraqi Government that are no better than water devining rods.

There must be some culpability on behalf of the Iraqi Government, but this trick has led to sales of many millions of pounds ... and possibly to the deaths of scores of innocent Iraqi lives. How cynical is this?

I sincerely hope the con artisst behind this is prosecuted and receives a severe sentence.
Glad to see this update to the discussion.
I've emailed UHUK, explaining the (?understandable) scepticism of this discussion, and encouraging them to post back on HOL to clarify their bona fides and, hopefully, benefit their endeavours.
