Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all -

I have an open fireplace in the front room of our house and would love to get a fire roaring in there.

It has a full 20th century hearth, tiled surround, mantelpiece etc but no grate for the fire itself. I'm getting a sweep round to check the chimney on Monday. Assuming that's OK, I will need to get all the stuff for the fire and I've been trying to remember the fireplaces of my childhood. I thought some of you may already have a fully functioning fireplace and could help me out.

I think what I need is a grate, ash pan and one of those covers that go at the front of the ash pan with vents in. Is that all? Does anyone know where I can get all that? And what about fuel - what can we burn round here and where do we get it?

Any help grate-fully received...

Anna

At a minimum, you can just get a grate like this one from Homebase.
All you really need is a grate that will support the coal off the ground and some kind of front-piece (fret) to keep the coal in and create some draft. The ash box is optional - we used to have a fire with an ash box - but it wasn't that useful, it is easier to just brush the ash out.

We had a similar problem a few years ago and went to a place nearby Amhurst Park - I think it must be this one:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?hl=en&source=hp&um=1&am...

It was at that time an Aladin's cave of old fireplace parts. if you take the measurements, maybe even a picture you should be able to find something. It was then very cheap.
It's still there - next door to Stamford Hill Station. The chaps who run it are great - good luck!
Fuel - strictly speaking, unless you have a modern multi-fuel stove, you should only burn smokeless fuel. Sadly it is difficult to get a 'roaring fire' with smokeless fuel!

I used to be able to get it at the Sainsburys garage, but don't know if they still sell it. One of the shops on Green Lanes sells it in small bags, but it is a bit expensive. Last week I was in B&Q at Tottenham Hale and they had logs/kindling/house coal etc. Perhaps Homebase does? These days I tend to make trips out to Crews Hill (to a yard on the road with all the garden centres) and buy several large bags of fuel. Kindling - raid a nearby skip and go to work with your saw and hatchet!

I can also add a recommendation of the fireplace shop at Stamford Hill station. Their phone no. is 020 8802 6317 according to an old card.

Have fun!
hello,

Picking up on an old thread...does anyone know what has happened to the fireplace shop on Amhurst Park? Went past yesterday and the area looks to be in the process of being demolished / developed (new Tesco??). Does anyone know if they have relocated, or have any alternative suggestions?

Thanks!
Lisa
