Advice Wanted; Shared Garden in Block of Flats
Hi everyone,
Just looking for some advice re. a shared garden for our block of flats. I've been guerilla gardening at the fringes for the last year and a bit and during lockdown I want to start stepping it up a bit.
Does anyone know how illegal or not it is to garden like this - most of the garden is either grass or shrubs and weeds.
I don't really know who to turn to, but the landlord is homes for Haringey.

I think HFH would be pretty churlish to complain about a resident doing their job for them! I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be okay for you to continue gardening.

It will probably be okay, but it's worth asking first so as not to end up in a disappointing situation. Get support and advice from your local councillors.
Guerilla gardeners on the Ladder spent time and money creating flower troughs facing the ends of the Harringay Passage. They got torn out by the Council.

Seeking forgiveness is easier than seeking permission! Go for it.
See if anyone mutters, maybe talk to your neighbours to see if anyone objects. Most times folks are happy to see someone else do the hard work!

I’d speak to homes for haringey to & to your tenants group, if you have one. The main reason being that it’s a communal space & you probably have neighbours who’d also like to get involved & use the space too. it might be that you take the opportunity to get all the neighbours involved in planning a space which has something for everyone eg somewhere to sit in the sun, a veg growing patch, a kids mud kitchen etc. There’s lots of good examples of communal garden spaces being used gardened in this way. The problem with you doing this on your own, without permission or open opportunity for others to get involved is that it could be interpreted as being a bit territorial & could deter others from using the space. Thanks for all the answers everyone :)
At the moment I'm just whacking stuff in the flowerbeds where there was just poop.
But I'd def get in touch with councillors for advice and maybe contact HFH - does anyone have an inkling about who would be contactable for that?
We don't currently have a group for tenants - does anyone have an idea how that could be setup?

It's best to tell Homes for Haringey. If you're willing to take full responsibility for an area they should be able to take it out of the maintenance contract. The last thing you want is plants getting ripped out or sprayed because contractors didn't know about them. I work in Housing for another borough and that's what we do.
It took us a while to offer that though and came on the heels of several angry people in local newspapers
As Haringey does not have a thriving local newspaper I feel like sometimes we are a bit behind other boroughs in these matters.
Taking things out of the contract was easier said than done too until absolutely everything was surveyed and logged in a new system... So it depends where Haringey is on these things.
