Confirmed: Betting Shop licence applied for 513 Green Lanes
Depressing news:
I don't really want to discuss the whys and wherefores of betting shops anymore. We did that to death on this thread. I just want to express my utter dejection that once again we were correct and we predicted this back in July
I think we will need to fight this. We will need our MPs and councillors united on this and willing to fight it every inch of the way, we need to back our residents groups and submit lots of objections.
Is there any other high street in London which is suffering from this concentation of gambling establishments?

Too bloody right, this is the final straw. Wasn't there one street in hackney who had this problem, and the residents really managed to make a difference?

Have written to the LCSP, they will probably write something to help us object effectively.

This is BetFred. I'm guessing they'll have plenty of money to pay lawyers to fight back just like MetroBet.

This is from the LCSP :
We have no realistic chance of LBH Licensing Commitee refusing a licence for this premises because the magistates' Court has overturned the Council's refusals in Green Lanes on 2 previous occasions, with costs.
So a Planning refusal is our only option. Please, please object to change of use before next Monday 30th November.

Absolutely gutted.
I think the street in Hackney Anette is thinking of might be Chatsworth Road, E5? I have a friend who lives there, will see what has happened there recently. But would be interested if anywhere else could beat 4 premises in this close proximity ...

So to summarise if you want to object:
1. Go to the Planning Inspectorate Website.
2. And make your appeal following guidance issued by the LCSP:
Points to bear in mind when writing your letter of objection:
- This is a Planning Appeal: reasons for objecting must therefore be on Planning grounds. These do not include issues such as effect on property values, personal opinions or moral/religious arguments about gambling, which is a lawful activity.
- strictly speaking, over-supply of gambling outlets in Green Lanes in not a Planning issue either, but with 7 betting shops and an Adult Gaming Centre already there, a case could be made for a ‘tipping point’ in terms of loss of amenity.
- the strongest focus in planning terms should be on the character and appearance of the area, noise and disturbance, effect of viability/vitality of shopping centre, loss of amenity for local residents, possible noise, light pollution, gathering of customers outside premises (smoking etc).
And please remember, the closing date is 30th November

Can I also add to this that research shows that gambling establishments can attract crime and disorder and support crime, e.g. the SNT in South Kilburn tell me drug dealers hang out in betting shops between deals. It makes me question why the there are so many betting shops? Demand? Or because a precedent has been set like a "dorma extension" on one of the houses on our street? All the Betting establishments want to come to Green Lanes now. Should we be asking the planning dept their reasons for allowing this to happen?

I don't think we can blame the planning department on this. They opposed all three applications last year. The Planning Inspector (central govt.) overturned Haringey's decisions.

Am I being cynical or is it just coincidence that the notice confirming that Betfred want the premises has gone up just a few days before the deadline for the Planning Inspectorate?
Very very depressing to learn that LCSP think Haringey won't refuse a license.
I've said it before but I'll say it again - all that chuff about supercasinos when this bill was being passed - how the hell did everyone (MPs, media, etc etc) miss the fact that betting shops taking over high streets in our sorts of area being the most common end result? Maybe that's it - wouldn't happen where most of them live eh.

What's the rate of these betting shops opening? Have been in the area two years and have notcied a few more in that time but wouldn't be able to say at what rate they're increasing.
