Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey Council's enforcement response team has won a national award for its work in combating noise.

The team won the local authority section in the John Connell Awards 2009 which is run by the Noise Abatement Society.

The awards recognise services, campaigns and programmes which are examples of community co-operation, education and creative solutions to solving noise pollution problems as well as outstanding efforts to reduce the impact of noise nuisance on the quality of the environment.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said:

"The enforcement team does a tremendous job in dealing with noise problems in the borough. It's a problem which can blight the lives of residents.

Haringey's nomination covered improvements to the service to combat noise and nuisance in two areas:

  • noisy residents living in temporary accommodation.
  • noise caused by people suffering from mental health conditions.

Gloria Elliott, Chief Executive of the Noise Abatement Society said:

"Haringey's submission demonstrates that giving team members the tools to deal with cases individually goes a long way to reducing the number of vulnerable people taken to court, or making criminals of those who are actually in need of care, whether in hospital or in the community."

Well done to them.

Lets hope Planning decisions also take into account potential noise 'problem(s) which can blight the lives of residents'. Wonder how that new train depot planning application is coming along, the one that will sit right next to Heartlands High. Maybe the school building will include triple glazing.
