Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Appalling traffic leaving Sainsbury's and Arena retail park - anyone know what's happening with it?
It took me an hour and 15 minutes to leave Sainsbury's car park today and I had a torrent of abuse from a revolting irate man and witnessed one car screeching up the wrong side of the road, over taking all the waiting traffic, screaming abuse at the hapless parking attendants trying to direct/calm the remaining traffic. I've seen several threads on this but they all seem to be from last year. I've reported the problem to the council (as I hope have many others) but the problem seems to have just got worse and worse. It seems particularly bad this week for some reason.
Does anyone know what is being done or planned to try and sort this out? I'm surprised that there hasn't been a serious assault or incident due to the ridiculously badly thought out traffic lights and planning of the extension of the store.

I don't think Sainsbury's are completely at fault here as the traffic management in Haringey overall appalling.

I'd completely agree with that BBU, but given the Council's failure to do anything about this, I'm just wondering if Sainsbury's would be responsive to customer pressure.

It's still bad - I got a text last night from a friend who queued for 50 minutes to get out. She won't be going back, so that's another customer lost Mr Sainsbury. Half term is over so it must be the knock on effect of the traffic problems elsewhere that other posts have mentioned.
I would never drive there in peak hours now. We get some things there every few weeks and get the rest from Green Lanes or delivered. Depends what you are after, but GL isn't more expensive, esp if you are after fruit and veg.
Just to back up Anne's recent comment about disputes between the stores - the most recent post we had about this said that the problem was failure to agree among the various tenants.

I gave up shopping at Sainsbury's last year because in the summer it was impossible to shop and get the food home before it all got boiled in the back of the car.
Green Lanes is a nightmare ....yesterday there was a massive traffic jam and the lights from Endimiyon Roard into Green Lanes was only 8 seconds of green. And yes, that is junction (Endimiyon and Green Lanes) where the council make a massive killing from cars being stuck in the diagonal boxes and getting fined ....nice one Haringey ...goes hand in hand with them coming around at 6am in the morning to tow away cars that are 6 inches over the double lines that they have installed at ALL THE ROAD junctions. Was that a safety issue or a cash cow for the council???

This is a huge problem. I live on the first block of Endymion, and of course it's a traffic problem, a shopping problem and an environment problem. The Arena retail park is a money spinner for the council and a disaster for us locals. Traffic on my road is jammed for 60% of the time. Unblocking Hermitage Road and providing access from there would improve things. Can we print some flyers and distribute them one Saturday/Sunday to motorists, asking for a Hermitage Rd exit? It's not the only answer, but it might get attention of those who decide these things!

I accept that many people want to shop using their cars but there are too many of them so if there was a second exit, it soon would be jammed as more people would be encouraged to drive. The council need to get serious about going green.
I walked to Sainsburys today, was in and out quickly, only nearly knocked down on zebra crossing by irate driver once. Not bad.
More public transport, paying to use Arena car park (after all, you have to pay to park on the roads around here!) and a shift in attitudes. That whole area is going to go to hell on a hand cart pretty soon if something isnt done.

see I must be stupid as I really dont get why local people are going by car to saisburys especially with kids in tow-when getting shopping delivered is so easy, and then traffic would automatically be reduced
maybe Im just jealous cos I have never had a car but my bicycle makes life so much easier and greener

I have never had a car, never passed a test even and I have managed with walking and public transport. People have just got used to cars. My mum had seven kids, no car, and she managed to get out shopping, carrying it all along with several kids on buses. Mind you, we did have milk delivered everyday, we had a breadman too and some other deliveries. Ocada etc are not new - housing estates used to be served really well by delivery services back in the 60s and 70s but here's me getting all nostalgic about the past again.....

I went to Camden again this week - two weeks running now and both times we've spent less than at Harringay. No idea why. But it's sooooooo much more civilised.

According to Which? magazine, Lidl is Britain's best value supermarket. There's one at the southern tip of Finsbury Park, but there's no parking at all. There is a walk through the length of the park involved, though.
