Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Slaying the Tyranny of text - Video-based reporting for HoL

As Liz will tell you, I've been bending her ear for a long while now about us adding that extra something with some video reporting. So, finally this weekend I made a start. And the positive feedback moves me to pen this post.

Some local sites are based mainly around video reporting. But I'd like HoL to add it as just one channel and I'd like to make it inclusive. Ideally we'd have more than just a handful of folks willing to use their smart phone or whatever to capture a local story. It could be news or opinion - as long as it's clear which it is.

So we might need a few things to start us off:

1. More than just me to throw their hats in the ring.
2. An outline code of ethics for the news side of things to ensure we offer balance.
3. Perhaps a couple of cheap pocket camcorders for those folks who want to participate but don't have a smartphone or other DVC.

Then we can do some learning as well.

Whilst making video content may be fun, the purpose would be to extend the audience fro what we're doing. Many people will simply never access the material on the site whilst it remains only in written form. That's a fact. Presenting it in video will potentially extend the audience into new groups who tend to make a choice to access information through audio or visual channels. Text alone will simply never reach some people.

I have a camcorder, editing facilities and time.
That mini-camcorder you link to is incredibly cheap:£32! Is the picture quality any good?

Like the idea of this (eg. 5 questions put to each local politician for up & coming elections).
I was told it was good Matt. Normally it's £49. It's an (the?) alternative to the Flip camera. (Creative are always coming up with great alternatives to pricey front-runner brands). I've lobbed the question out to the person who told me openly on Twitter. So let's see what comes back.

Certainly for elec coverage and more. There's lots o creative ways we can use the mdeium to cover serious stuff as well as the lighter side.
Obviously good enough for the purpose - see Hugh's U-tube video.

640 x 480 pixels
I take it the software (if any) can be passed around to load up on various computers (eg. editing)?

If quality assured how do we pay for a couple of cameras (£64 + postage) ... gather donations at HOL drinks maybe? I'll throw in a fiver.
At the time of writing that offer finishes in 1 day, 14 hours and 36 minutes - then back up to £49.
The verdict:

I've got access to lots of kit - cameras, sound, editing/graphics software and video compression equipment, and I've a fair amount of experience in TV and video for the web. Unfortunately, I don't have enough free time to make any firm commitments - I'd hate to let you down because work got in the way! But please keep me posted on this; I'd love to help out when I can.
Hugh the Vado has a rechargeable battery.
what kind of battery and does it come with a charger ?
batteries are very important because of recordable time length
i could not get answers to these questions.
Says 2 hours recording time and battery can be removed for charging so must have external charger

" But the Vado has a healthy 2GB of flash memory on board. At the top HQ quality mode, this is enough for about an hour of video, or two hours in SP mode. But there is no removable media slot for storage expansion. "

I have a camcorder. If say I shot some footage of dog poo in Harringay Passage (joke) would someone be able to edit it down to something watchable and youtube friendly?
Yeah - no problem.
