I watched a nice documentary posted here a few days ago on the Cypriot community In North London, and this reminded me I had entirely forgotten to share on here a short (6 minute) documentary film I directed and produced last year about our local community, called "From Dump to Oasis". You will recognise two of the protagonists and other local residents.
I am not a professional film maker; I made this as part of an entry-level documentary film making course which I attended during a recent career break. To my surprise, the film must have touched a chord: it ended up in the "official selection" for the prestigious Rieti and Sabina Film festival in Italy in November 2019 (an event set up to bring positivity to a place devastated by recent earthquakes) and received a "special mention" at the London X4 Short Film Festival, October 2019. It also also been screened at the City Lit Flicks film festival in London in August 2019; at the APT Trust art gallery in Deptford, London in September 2019 and, more predictably, at the Gardens Residents Association annual outdoor film event in September 2019, in front of the Mayor of Haringey.
The film is a intended as a celebration of a community coming together. In my original plan I wanted to cover the wider community including Harringay Online which I also believe has been very important for this area, as well as other crucial local initiatives around Green Lanes as a whole, but I had to keep it short and focused and stick to 5-6 minute maximum, so this is the result...

Thats a great 'short' film. I've lived on the Ladder for many years and wasn't too aware of what goes on across the other side of Green Lanes, so thanks and hope you make more.
Thanks Germana for your GRA film. I was told about the garden space in 2004 and I have been there often for a few different events and admired it. It is a 'magic' space and your film is great.
Great film, thanks Germana, a great spotlight on lovely little community
Fantastic video, Germana. congrats and thanks for sharing
Amazing transformation. As kids (50s) we used to play on the embankments both side of the railway so I would not be surprised if we did not walk the now parkland!
For us west of Green Lanes, these eastern areas were a foreign land but I did have a friend who lived in one of the long roads - Roseberry Gdns I think - and we could hear the Piccadilly Line trains running under their house. I always thought it a but naff!
I have just watched this wonderful little film in tears.
My best friend Veronica O’Donoghue and her family lived at 87 Stanhope Gardens and we often played outside her house.
My parents lived at 8 Warwick Gardens from 1950, I was born in 1955 and they sold up and moved to Hertford in 1976. At that time there was no community spirit in the Gardens other than a nod and conversation with people that you knew, and it would be fair to say the area was becoming very run down....but even after 44 years since we moved I still miss the place and I still dream of it and remember a very happy, loving and safe upbringing there.
Well done to all of you for doing a wonderful job in making the area a community, safer, cleaner and welcoming.
im still in tears x
sorry for taking 3 years to reply - I haven't been on this forum for a bit. Thanks for the lovely feedback. I am glad it brought back some good memories, and indeed well done to the community for coming together to make a lot of improvements!
