Pest Control Recommendations/Advice ( ANTS)
Hi
We've had this ant infestation problem in the kitchen for the past 6 months. It started off as the odd few but now they are everywhere. In the cupboards, in the draws, on the kitchen surfaces, floor.
It’s turning into a nightmare, we've looked for nests outside in the garden but cant find anything and the kitchen unit is closed off which makes it hard to look for nest inside...
We live on Haringey ladder and just want an expert to come and help us.
It’s regular black garden ants, phoned the council and they only help out when it’s red ants.
Can anyone suggest a trustable person/company in the Haringey area to help us?
Would be very grateful for any advice too!
We are generally very clean but no matter how much we clean they keep coming back

Have you tried baby powder stand and watch where they form lines coming into cupboards drawers etc it chokes then and they take it back to nest or even ant powder or even salt just try one thing ata time good luck

I had a real ant infestation in the kitchen a few years ago that built up over time. I got rid of it by using that bait stuff that they carry back to their nest and it kills them there. It was very effective although you have to have patience - it doesn't happen immediately but I have never had a repeat infestation since. I still have one of the 'bait stations': it is like a smallish plastic puck which you leave on one of their main routes. I think to make it active there are some plastic flanges you have to break so the ants can access it and I probably used 2-3 of them around the place. The brand of this called Antstop! but I think there are a number of similar ones. I liked the fact that the poison was inaccessible to curious pets/kids etc.
I do seem to remember trying some other stuff called Nippon which wasn't effective.

The Ant Stop bait station works amazingly. I had the same problem, within a couple of days they were gone, and they have yet to return, that was almost 9 months ago!
Try and place the bait stations where you think they are coming from, I would use 2 or 3 to cover a larger area.

It doesn't seem to be working for us, did you put the bait stations in places you could check to see if ants were going in? The holes on the bait station are tiny, not sure if the scent is attracting them. I'll try for a few more days and put a couple more under the kitchen unit.
Because this particular brand is closed off with plastic, can't check to see if they nibbled at the bait and we never see them swarming around it.
We've got a cat, so it’s tricky to leave the bait stations in places we prefer.
We do however see them often on kitchen surface and in cupboards/draws.
People are now suggesting to use some sort of Ant gel which apparently is much more effective.

Yes we assumed the ants were coming from underneath our boiler cupboard so we put it there and then under another kitchen unit.
Basically the idea is that the ants carry the bait to the Queen ant which kills it and then subsequently all the other ants, I don't think you would expect to see ants inside it.
Also this could take time if there are a lot, you may just have to be a little patient.

Hi Mario,
This sounds a bit too early in the season (ant season that is) to be a black garden ant problem and if its been around for the last 6 months could well be the brown ant: lasius brunneus . This species is very similar in appearance to the black garden ant lasius niger but unless the activity is in close proximity to a good heat source like a boiler it will be the former.
Positive I.D. is crucial as the brown ant feeds on nutrients found in weak timber and requires a far more targeted approach than black garden ants.
I am working on the ladder most weeks and will happily call in on an F.O.C basis if you require to identify the species and offer some D.I.Y help if I think it feasible.

I've used ant powder successfully. Put some down where I've seen ants and they've been gone within a couple of days. Also put anything sweet like jam, honey, sugar, dried fruit in the fridge until the coast is clear (I learned the hard way that my sealed plastic containers might keep mice out but they are no match for ants!)
My neighbour had some too so I lent him the ant powder.
They came back once a couple of years later but swift treatment sorted it.
