Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

ARTHUR ASTROP - "delightful man - cultured, charming, erudite"

I notice somebody returned to one of Arthur's early Memories in the last day or two: his visits to the corner shop and the sweet factory. I had wondered about Arthur over the past couple of years, but maybe Hugh, Liz or another HOL member had brought us up to date in March/April 2017 and I missed it.

As far as my excavations reveal, Arthur's last post (on HOL that is) was just three years ago, at 11.19 am 19 November 2016.  "Hear-hear! in spades!" he wrote in a comment on Edward Constable's thanks to Hugh and Liz for another great year of HOL. In July 2015, soon after his 92nd birthday, he concluded: "Old age, I fear, comes at a bad time." He seems to have been a HOL Member from Boxing Day 2008.

Arthur, a retired journalist, and founder member of the Warwickshire Industrial Archaeology Society (WIAS), died as the pips sounded for the One O'clock News on Friday 17th March 2017, aged not quite 94.  I wish I could have reminded him it was St Patrick's Day.

It is for the two-paragraph tribute from the Chairman and another member of WIAS that I direct you to this archive link. Arthur in real life was obviously the same man we knew here on HOL.

Scroll down through various examples of industrial archaeology till you meet an image of a Cast-Iron Cooking Pot.

Tributes to Arthur and details of his death and funeral follow that image.  See also his Occasional Paper (Oct 2000) based on talks given to the WIAS: "The Rise and Fall of Coventry Machine Tool Industry".

Thank you for letting us know about Arthur.  His posts were always a delight to read.  You can see his memories of a childhood lived in Harringay in the 1920s and 30s by clicking the link below

Thanks for this, Eddie. A quick check on the web offers only one Arthur Astrop. In his fascinating eight part series on growing up in Harringay, he told us that he was born on April 14, 1923. This fits with the Arthur commemorated by the WIAS. So, I think it's safe to assume it was the same man.

I also found the following obit from the Leamington Courier of March 24, 2017.

ASTROP Arthur Frederick William Passed away 16th March 2017, aged 93 years.

Beloved Husband of the late Margery. Much loved Father of Kate and the late Maggi. Adored Grandpa to Robert, Hannah, Jack, Alex, Joe and Laurie and Great Grandfather to sixteen wonderful Great Grandchildren.

A life well lived.

Funeral Service to take place on Wednesday 5th April 2017 at Oakley Wood Crematorium North Chapel at 11.30 am.

No flowers, donations to Young at Heart may be sent c/o John Taylor Funeral Service, 178 Warwick Road, Kenilworth, CV8 1HU

I add the above as a doff of the cap from me. I'm glad that Arthur found us in time to share his memories.

Exactly, Hugh.

Well that is sad.  I very much enjoyed reading some of his contributions.  Also noted we shared same birth date, day and month that is, not year.      And as his obituary read........ "  a life well lived  ".   Hope his grandchildren were fortunate enough to share in his childhood memories.
