Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A man, currently living at the Mosque end of Wightman Road, is obsessively collecting wheelie bins from the surrounding area, as far away as Turnpike Lane, is going through the rubbish and discarding what he does not want on private ground on the station side of Hampden Road. The discarded rubbish will of course attract rats and other vermin and includes personal correspondence from the rifled bins.

I spoke to him yesterday, 11th August and told him to stop.

He approached me on the street by Hampden Road this morning: I said I had seen that he had not stopped dumping rubbish as he had promised, whereupon he became excited, swung a punch at me (which missed ) and said if I went to the police he would “come after me”.

He is about 5ft 6”, sunburnt face, about 50, thin and always wears a hat, shirt, jeans and red plastic sandals. He claims to be collecting rubbish for recycling to raise funds for self-defence courses to combat knife crime.

He is a very unbalanced and unpleasant man and it would be (would have been ) advisable not to approach him.

I've seen him there too. I wondered what he was up to.

You did the right thing in approaching him IMHO. We can't be scaredy cats running to the police for every weedy weirdo.
Oh you wet, wet, wuss. The reason we have an increasingly "police state" is because we're scared out of our tiny little minds by newspaper reports of "man stabbed while aiding another" incidents and leave every petty bit of confrontation to the police. The police encourage us to not approach nutters in the street as it makes them more important/useful, not because we might get "hurt".
I think most people would see the police as important and useful as things stand, without their needing to look for excuses so as to be seen to be important and useful. There are more than a few demands on their time.

While there might be circumstances when a member of the public needs to confront someone urgently, I can understand the police caution about tackling nutters by members of the public. The police are better trained and equipped to deal with difficult situations and they can quickly call for backup if needed.

The police are less likely to live locally; are more likely to be neutral and dispassionate than a member of the public, who may overreact and land up in trouble with the law themselves.

If the police don't already know about this gentleman, perhaps they need to.

.
I must say... what a very thorough description John ;-) IMO Any man caught wearing red plastic sandals should be arrested on fashion grounds, let alone for swinging punches.

Regarding John M, and Ben's comments:

(the following ties in with another thread regarding the Harringay Passage)

I personally think everyone should go out of their way to learn some basic self defence. (although we shouldn't have to) It is very much a case of being vigilant (anywhere in public) and confidence is a far better feeling than fear.

In my experience, nine times out of ten, any attacker will make a quick assessment and only pick on someone who looks smaller, weaker, or even looks slightly intimidated or scared.

If you feel confident you naturally look more confident... Every situation needs to be assessed quickly, and judged on it's own merits.

I am a member of a very good Karate club and we have pensioners, children, male and female, all training and helping each other... some use it to keep fit, others join because of an incident, everyone has their own reasons, but the one thing we all have in common... It helps keep you calm, generally more aware of your surroundings, and able to assess a situation very quickly.

As far as the rubbish dumping goes... lets get him! (Only Joking)

I had a family outside my office the other day, they decided to have a quick break on the doorstep to my shop/office. Upon leaving they left behind the pile of Albanian newspapers that they were delivering, I had to run outside with a rubbish sack and collect them all up before they blew around in the road. It's inconsiderate to others, and 'bleep bleeeeeep' annoying for all of us. That said at least they didn't sport plastic red sandals!
I wear a fine pair of red plastic sandals which go sportingly well with the guardian tucked under my arm. I am also attempting a beard. so there you fascionados !
I had you down for pastel shades James, being so shy and all! It just goes to show you... we should never judge ;-)
He also has a faded blue beret.
Not to be confused with blue berry, whilst talking on a black berry, or even listening to 'Prince'
I think John did exactly the right thing for him.

If he feels confident enough, then approaching someone like that is okay in the first instance.

Having said that, every single person I have ever tried to help see the "error of their ways" from hoodie with ugly pooing dog to man dropping litter to lady on mobile phone driving have abused me verbally and threatened me physically (none of whom would be classed as having mental health problems) so on balance I'd say talking to the police is probably the best way to go.

However, getting hold of anyone be it SNT or an enforcement officer seems to be harder and harder. The curse of modern technology seems to be that they can hide behind an answer phone, an email or a customer service and never ever feedback to the member of the public about what action they are taking.

I am getting increasingly tired of emails not returned, phone calls not returned and or a message left with a person at customer services going under a coffee cup and never reaching the person responsible. So, John, let us hope that you can actually find someone who takes you seriously enough to come and investigate a man who is clearly committing a number of offences and is violent. Let us know...
Sounds like another Version of the man that made Haringey Famous on TV with his Rubbish filled House and Garden - Mr Rebus

I would take it up with Home Beat Officers
Enviromental Health
Advise Bin Owners - phone number should be on Bin - It's theft of their Bins

It took many years to Solve Mr Rebus's problems -
Do not let it get out of Hand -

Re threats - seems that many make threats - in the hope that others will forget the issue

Get your Ward Councillor's Involved - It Seems We are paying them enough these Day's

BOB/R
I think you mean Mr Trebus Robert
Was a long time ago...........
