Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I recently went on a tour of the Library of Things in Crystal Palace and I am interested in starting a one in the area (Finsbury Park / Stroud Green). If you are interested, please let me know!

What is the Library of Things? - Website here: https://www.libraryofthings.co.uk/how-it-works/ - It is a place for people in the neighbourhood to borrow things - home appliances such as carpet cleaner, electric drill, gardening equipment, amplifier etc. Most of them are heavy or expensive things that you would use once in a while, but are hesitant about buying. - It is a space for the neighbourhood to get together, to learn DIY and repair skills. - The first Library of Things started in London a few years ago in Crystal Palace, and they are looking to expand. It’s run mainly by volunteers.

I don’t work for the Library of Things. I am a resident in the area interested in starting one. If you’re interested in learning more about it or helping to start one, let me know.

Once we have got a team, the first thing we can do is to organise a trip to the Library of Things in Crystal Palace and understand how it works in practice. Then we can start planning (e.g. fund raise, finding a site, recruiting volunteers etc.)

I like this idea. With the time I spend on HoL, I’m not sure I have any time to offer you, but happy to help spread the word. I imagine finding a space out of which to operate might be the biggest challenge.  I wonder if there’d be any space/interest from GLA/StART in the forthcoming St Ann’s development.

Hi Hugh and Byford,

Like Hugh, I also support the idea. I'd definitely use it! Regarding volunteering, most of my available time is already taken with StART and Friends of Chestnuts, but I wouldn't mind participating, especially in this initial stage and perhaps offer my organising skills of a librarian... I've filled out the doodle poll.  I will also pass Hugh's idea to StART members (other StARTers might have already read this post...). Good luck!

This sounds like a fab idea. Although HOL kind of does this already (Although it's more like changing ownership)

Thank you Hugh and Alice. Will keep you posted!

Hi all - I am thinking about gathering the few of us who have expressed interests to meet in the next week or so, to get to know each other and plan ahead.

If you're interested, please fill in the doodle poll below and we can find a time that works for all of us:

Thanks

A brilliant idea as we don't all possess the tools we need from time to time and some items are bulky and take up loads of space. I like he idea of sharing and learning new skills too. Maybe there are HOL members who would be happy to donate or lend items.

I believe the term should be "a RESary of Things" since Books are not involved. It also suggests the idea of "REServing".  Or maybe "RESARIUM" is the ticket.

Really, folks must brush up on their Latin. It's bad enough having to correct the MET on the words they use.

Mutuarium?

Indeed, Joe, Mutuarium is excellent with all the meanings of borrowing, lending, reciprocity etc.  Rerumutuarium would be a suitably grammatical portmanteau to combine all those senses with the basic thinginess of the thing.

Or, to borrow from our French cousins - an Outilotheque ?

I see what you did there.

I like it, John. French touch with a bow to the Greek.
