Door to door fish seller on Pemberton - slightly strange
Had a man knock at the door offering to sell fish but I saw no sign of a van or anything. Just feels slightly strange especially since an hour later I've seen the guy on the road. Wondered if anyone else had opened the door to him or can tell me I'm worrying needlessly. Thanks

Actually. He came to my door too. We have previously bought fish from door to door sellers, but to be honest, I'm just not sure who these guys are nor the providence of what they are selling.
If I knew they were genuine fishermen/mongers and their fish was fresh and of high quality I would buy it- the problem is I just do not, and sadly it drives me into the arms of folks like Sainsbury's instead.

My worry was I didn't see any van or anything and it felt like a bit of an odd interaction. I'm just conscious of people looking for empty / vulnerable houses and I didn't get a good feeling this afternoon (normally I'm not a worrier)

I think the guy is genuinely selling fish....he door knocks first then delivers later. But as Justin says the quality of his stock is a bit hit and miss though.

Look up Soleshare if you want to know where your fish is coming from! You can choose a weekly or fortnightly collection - I get fortnightly. Highly recommend and it's the most ethical fish possible.

Not sure how you worked that out, their pricing page gives price per month - so for me getting a half kilo twice a month it works out to £18 per kg. If you get shellfish it's always more like a kilo. Sometimes you get mussels (cheap), sometimes you get Dover sole or oysters. Crab is my favourite and that features quite often.

Sorry I miscalculated - you are right, it adds up to 2x deliveries of 0.5kg - which is approx. £18 per kg which compares favourably with Waitrose etc.

There are a pair of Geordie guys that sell fish - they go door to door.
The first one is called Alan -and he's the original guy. The second guy used to work for Alan and has now branched off on his own, and is trying to pinch Alan's customers.
They drive down from North Shields (just north of Sunderland), with fresh fish from the docks, and they portion it up and sell it when they get here. They come through every 3 months or so.
We've been buying off Alan for 2 or 3 years, the fish is good quality, the price is reasonable. You end up with 15 or so packs, and you freeze it and eat it over the 3 months.

One of my friends used to sell fish from a van when I lived in Oxford. He would drive up to Grimsby each week the night before the trawlers came back with their catches. The next morning he would drive back to Oxford and sold the fish door to door. He did this each week. He had a lockup with freezers and fridges, which he would stock up for the week. The process would be repeated each week. It was hard work, but he earned good money from it. There were a few other guys doing the same thing and they were always trying to get onto each others' sales territory. The quality of the fish was usually good, but it depends on the person running the business.
