Nasty incident on Wightman Road
I am sure that everyone is bored to tears of hearing about incidents involving cyclists on Wightman Road but this morning's one was particularly nasty and this post is more about speading the word and also asking if anyone witnessed it.
Going south, at about 8.20am the traffic was queueing from before Burgoyne Road, as I approached the traffic island in front of Moka Café I went on the outside of a car that was creeping along, it was necessary for me to stop alongside him to make sure he didn't squash me on the island. He was sitting texting, oblivious to the fact I was alongside him. As he looked up and saw me watching him he went ballistic, shouting at me and when I said "you shouldn't be on your phone" he put his foot down on the accelerator, pulling across my path to block me (nearly knocking me off my bike in the process). This sudden movement caused a motorcyclist to nearly crash into the back of me. When she remonstrated with him she was met with the most vile tirade of abuse.
This man is a danger on the road not least because of the amount of anger he displayed and his aggressive display of driving which was clearly intended to intimidate me.
Unfortunately I didn't get his registration (I was pretty shocked and shaken) but he was driving a silver saloon car. If I had the registration I would be reporting this incident to the police.
If the motorcyclist is on HoL, apologies that you got caught up in this horrible incident too.

Oh Karen, I'm so sorry to hear about this. License plates are hard to get in the heat of the moment and this is coming from someone whose only special super power is remembering license plate numbers. I'm very tempted to invest in front and rear cameras.

I've been thinking for some time that I will invest in a helmet camera, not least because at least these incidents will be recorded (with registration plates) as I can never ever remember them afterwards. I am angry with myself that I can't remember it as it really should be reported to the police (which Osbawn suggests) which I still may do.

Sorry to hear. Pity you didn't get his number. I'm a driver but have encountered this kind of abuse occasionally often for no apparent reason. But violent angry people often don't need much excuse.

Sorry to hear this Karen, but don't let them intimidate you. Last week I had a driver reveres back up the road towards me because I signalled to him to slow down as he was doing at least 40 on Langham Road @ 8.30 am when lots of parents and kids will be around. He tried to block me off as well but would have had to hit a parked car to actual complete his manoeuvre, which I believe was the only thing that stopped him. Wish I'd had a helmet cam for that one.

Thanks Mavic. Sounds like you had a pretty awful experience there. I definitely think I will get a helmet camera - I don't know if it makes people think twice about acting so appallingly if they know they are being filmed!
It does make we want to give up my commute to work by bike everyday I have to say but then I miss out on my daily exercise and the good its doing must outweight the risks I suppose.
Today's lesson learnt is not to challenge bad behaviour - which is a very sad state of affairs indeed.

Unfortunately as per the other thread I'm noticing more and more a********** driving through Haringay, as speeding and terrible driving are an everyday occurence.

... sorry to hear that... I gave up cycling a few years back after a hit and run driver left me too injured to cycle... the police claimed that the vehicles registered owner was not the driver and they couldn't prosecute... it's likely your incident would be filtered out by the police so wouldn't even appear on crime statistics... the only way the situation could be more effectively policed is for CCTV/speed cameras using ANPR to issue automated fines for speeding... if the money could be utilised by local authorities it would soon pay for the cost of installation... it could also be used to control illegal parking...

Only mildly off the theme of vehicle vs cyclist, but I saw this the other day and thought it was interesting.
It makes the point that those with cameras have a fighting chance of seeing the right thing happen post any stupid event like this. Indeed, I suspect it may only be with more wide spread and prevalent use of carrying cameras on bikes will drivers feel that they might have to moderate their behavior in case they are being filmed and could ultimately be persecuted...
It makes me think about the Jeremy Vine incident and the woman who went to jail after her astonishing behavior in a car.

Gathering a Lincoln's Inn on Saturday for the Stop Killing Cyclists "National Funeral for the Unknown Cyclist" a lovely Black Cab driver stopped by to offer some words of advice. He stayed to offer more advice until I told him his license plate number and then he couldn't get out of there quick enough.
Rather distastefully his advice was that cyclists were all stupid and that's why they die. I didn't bother reminding him that it was a "knowledgeable" black cab driver that ran over a famous Professor of Genetics at St John St last month and killed her.
