Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

After a number of recent threads on here about the miserable state of our streets, a few of us are planning a neighbourhood meeting on the subject.

When: Sunday, August 19, at 11am
Where: Beans and Barley on Green Lanes

The objective of the group is ... well, we'll find out, if anyone turns up! But based on  discussions here on the site it will be to clear up the borough, with the ambition that doing so might deter future flytippers and result in longterm changes.

I dunno, but we might:

  • Designate an autumn clean-up period
  • Organise groups of volunteers to litter-pick in Harringay - in the ward itself and other wards, depending on who turns up.
  • Try to find strategies to spread the word, before, during and after the event.
  • Work on a strategy such that we're not just doing the council's job for it, but inspiring it to greater things.

Er, somehow.

By the way, this is separate from the recent post here  - which is a great thing, but this is more about volunteering and community action.

The more people comment here on this forum, the less nebulous this will all be when we meet.  And I have an immediate question. Does anyone know what to do with any rubbish that is collected?

Whilst I agree that dumped rubbish is demoralising, I am reluctant to do other people's dirty work for them.  At the bottom of my street, people who live above the shops put their overflowing rubbish bags onto the street.  A sign asking that no rubbish dumping happen was translated into several languages and put on the lamp post.  Despite this, it was torn off and the rubbish continues.  I am lucky in that the refuse men remove it daily as they take the rubbish from the shop at the bottom of the street.  But if I also remove the rubbish, I think it sends the wrong message in that the dumpers are having their work done for them (twice!) and that is no deterrent.  Better to have a crowdfunding for CCTV cameras to catch and fine the culprits.

Let's meet and discuss alternatives...

Challenging certain sections of the community when they drop litter or fly-tip can result in pure aggression.

Please be careful out there.

That's a good point. Although I think that can happen with any section of the community.

there is another meeting in September also advertised in today's Ketchup, pls go to this one too

Thanks Mimi, I didn't see that - can you provide more details or a link?

it's all on the link in the ketchup.

Hi everyone,

I've reached out to the Chair of the Ladder Community Safety Partnership, Ian Sygrave.  I told him about the overwhelming consensus on this forum that action is needed asap. Ian agrees that the rubbish situation has gotten out of control recently and will make it a big topic at their next meeting (Thursday 13 Sep, 7pm, Location: Harringay United Church Hall, (Junction of Green Lanes/Allison Road, N8)

Ian writes: "I will invite Dave Shipp, Enforcement Manager for our area (who attends anyway from time to time), a rep from Veolia and the Ward Councillors. As you know, the LCSP has a 20 year history of positive action in this area and is an ideal forum to take this forward, having a very large number of members across all the Ladder roads."

I think given LCSP's network of contacts and track record it is a good platform to kickstart this action. I will attend the meeting and the more ppl are present at that meeting the more vocal we can be about our concerns and hopefully show the representatives that we are serious about this issue and no longer accept the status quo.

Hope to see many of you at the meeting.

Cheers

I don't suppose I'm the only one whose first thought was that an appropriate destination for any collected rubbish might be at the doors of the Civic Centre... The regular flytipped-mattress collection has just taken place at the corner of my road (in St Ann's, not the Ladder), but Veolia might as well add it to a weekly round of pick-ups, as it'll only be a few days before more rubbish piles up in the same spot. I realise anti-social behaviour's a fact of life and that the Council's ever more strapped for cash, but the apparent lack of rubbish enforcement in Green Lanes suggests a lack of commitment, and surely it's not the job of volunteers to compensate?

Sadly, won't be around Sunday. Was thinking though, that if shopowners swept/washed down the pavement infront of their shops like they do in Italy,  for instance,  it would make walking down Green Lanes a more  pleasant experience.

I actually saw a few people doing that today, taking advantage of the rain.

I'm away this weekend unfortunately but would love to support, count me in if there's a litter pick.

Just poked my nose in B&B wasn’t sure who to turn to...
