Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We just visited for lunch, and were utterly delighted. It's a small place, and very much a family business (the whole family was there). The menu is large and, if there are vegetarians coming, very vegetarian-friendly.

A very satisfying lunch for 2: their "Beirut-style" humus, lemony and spicy, a fattoush salad, and a shared portion of kibbeh. They also do fresh juices and a lovely Lebanese-style lemonade with mint. The whole indulgence came to 25 quid. Everything was freshly made, and as good if not better than what you can get at the well known places on Edgware Road.

This whole stretch of road is getting to be very attractive to food lovers indeed. The much-loved standby Autograf (have potato pancakes with goulash if they haven't run out) has now been joined by the reliably fine Italian place Passione i Tradizione, the sublime Oasi pizzeria, and a few places we haven't tried, including an Italian deli and a naan bakery. Onward!

With Shisha 'Garden' :)

We have been twice and it is super family friendly! They are so sweet and gave us some baklava to thank us for coming twice. I think they need lots of support to tidy their rough edges and I recommend it! Always prefer Lebanese food and was not disappointed

Thanks for the tip! The naan bakery is very lovely too :)

Many thanks to people for recommending Jood, the Lebanese restaurant at 443 West Green Road, N15.
Zena and I went there yesterday evening with a visiting family member. We can confirm all the positive comments!

Some friends of ours who live close-by had twice ordered takeaways and were even more glowing in their review.

The only negative factor isn't about the restaurant itself but the longstanding problem along West Green Road of rubbish bags on the pavements.  I realise there's no simple answer - especially with flats above shops. But the Council will be looking at business rates as a growing source of income.  It needs to think harder about the waste collection.

To me, at least, cleaner streets as you arrive and leave are a vital item on the "menu". Any developer knows this. I've never seen "artists impressions" of a regeneration scheme which feature graffiti, piles of spilling rubbish, and greasy gloop staining pavements.

Agree totally Alan - the impression you get of the street is an important part of the decision whether to go back for me.  However, I don’t think it’s an inevitable consequence of a mix of commercial and residential.  Both Crouch End and Muswell Hill have a lot of residential above business premises and they are never in the state you see West Green Road and Green Lanes.  It’s about the will to put the work in to sort it out.

Michael, I agree there's nothing "inevitable" about having grubby streets or a bus stop where you have to queue next to a pile of rubbish bags. As well as putting in the work, as you suggest, the Council needs to find money for staff who can contact traders, residents and landlords to encourage, persuade and - when necessary - enforce the rules.

I imagine switching resources should be possible from the mostly redundant/failed regeneration schemes. Similarly, dispensing with most of the umpteen pointless regeneration consultancies. Plus ending subsidies on "meanwhile" businesses and a few favoured places. Instead I'd prefer to see Haringey getting "the basics" right: cleaner streets; catching and warning /fining dumpers. Also mending pavements and potholes as early as possible. There are no savings to be made by delay. The cracks and holes don't fill themselves; they get worse and people have accidents.

There are lots of local businesses - many are small family firms - who invest their own money and hard work. But it shouldn't be the Council's job to play favourites and use public adverts, the Comms Team or the Haringey People magazine to advertise them.

Instead let's all consider writing personal reviews on HoL. Or say, Trip Advisor. Or just tell our friends and neighbours about places we enjoy visiting. Word online, or word-of-mouth may be a worth more to them than the most generous cash tip.

And here's a website I sometimes go for genuine personal reviews. Kake Pugh writing this month in the Randomness Guide enjoyed a restaurant in Blackstock Road near Finsbury Park. She's going back, which is the best review.

Ah, thanks for reminding me about Randomness Guide which had fallen off my radar yet again.  I've followed them on and off for donkeys years but it is the kind of site that I can only use via a feed reader, otherwise I just forget/can't be arsed.  Nowadays feed readers are so unfashionable that I'm regularly losing the content when I have to abruptly move to a new one.

Vaneska I don't know what a feed reader is. I just use the RGL homepage and search.  Though I spotted this particular review because Kake Pugh posted photos of the Turkish and Uyghur menus on her Flickr photostream.

As I recall, Kake wrote -or co-wrote - the code on which the Randomness Guide runs. So you may want to email her, or post a message on the RGL blog.
