The privatization of the Internet could be decided in the next few weeks. On May 5th, the European Parliament will vote on a package of measures which will affect the national laws of all EU countries.
The European Parliament is about to give up our rights to an open access to the Internet to protect the interests of Entertainment and Communications multinationals. A civil campaign by organizations of the whole European Community will be simultaneously launched tonight in order to prevent the privatisation of the Internet and to defend the democratic right to access to information and digital tools.
This campaign includes:
1 - An informative website explaining what the so called " Telecommunications Package ", which is about to be voted on in the European Parliament, is, why it is so dangerous for the future of citizens. the impact on their daily economy, as well as useful information and tools created by citizens for citizens, including open letters, press releases, a blog and video material:

2 - A letter to members of the European Parliament that it is being sent by hundreds of organizations and citizens (one Euro Parliamentarian recognized that they are receiving as many as 200 letters a day):

3 - An automatic system that allows citizens to send the letter directly to all the Members of the European Parliament:

This is to remind members of the European Parliament that they need our vote in June. The Internet still provides us with the tools to watch and judge their actions. And we need this to continue.

What a load of tosh! Anyway, it's a bit late ain't it.. ?? Ach .. what will UKIP think of next.. whip up a bit of anti-European feeling just before an election.. Don't be taken for a ride...
I'm afraid I find it a bit rich, to talk about such things, when this site and mine too regularly posts information about who's online and where they come from, as well as their birthdays..
And all this in country where you can't even fart on the street without someone knowing about it.. and where your every move on the transport system can be checked back to your oyster card.. and compared with the antenne reports from mobile and wlan..
No, no .. it's all a waste of time and money..
and has more to with whipping up anti-EU feeling and nowt to do with personal security and I won't be a part of it...

Steve, I can't find any reference to this being a UKIP thing. Where have you got that from?
Have I misunderstood this? I don't think this is about personal security "who's online and where they come from, as well as their birthdays" but about stopping people accessing sites which facilitate alleged piracy but will result in us having to buy packages which only allow you to see sites in your package, like sky TV packages.
From the website:
Unless people have that address [e.g. your blog] in their "package" of regular websites - they won't be able to find you. That means they can't buy, or book, or register, or even view you online

The UKIP was only my assumption because I find the whole thing as well as the name Blackout Europe ludicrous..
The German site linked from that site mentions nothing of all that .. That's why I think the whole thing is a scam .. IMO - It's just 'wrong shaped bananas' all over again..
And anyway because we only have a very weak 'TV package system' with only around 10% using it I think-- that wouldn't work here anyway..

I'm not really sure that this is technically possible.
Would they just control the DNS lookups or actual "packages" of IP addresses?
How would my VPN into my employer work?
Would my internet bank access need to be purchased?
I think this is actually about making traffic shaping and throttling legal. It won't be about restricting access to certain sites so much as certain "services" such as bittorrent. Nasty but, red herring.
Remember Al Gore being lampooned for saying that he'd "invented" the Internets? Well, he didn't quite say that but he was the guy who arranged for it to be the lovely free thing that it is today.

The FaceBook group page actually makes it easier to understand and has links to the EU's own page on this if anyone wants to wade through it. It's not a hoax, I don't think, the legislation is there (or else someone has gone to a lot of trouble to mock up the European Parliament page), basically, I think, John is right that it's about giving themselves the power to restrict access to certain sites

I said it was about giving themselves the power/obligation to restrict access to certain services, I don't see how they can filter access to certain www sites without making a mess. They're basically trying to stop people copying music/movies illegally which happens via things like bittorent which is a peer-to-peer service. The bloke beside me at work does not use Virgin because they do this already, although it's not illegal so they can't throw you in jail for it, just cut off your access.
