I am truly at my wit's end with the parents and the school.
Despite there being a glut of available safe places to park within 100m of the school, parents continue to park on the pavement and the school's emergency exits, blocking pedestrians from using the pavement.
I have tried extensively to engage the school in collaborating with the local community to find a solution to this issue, but the school has consistently refused to meet to discuss this, or to try to implement any solutions. The school's reply is that simply it is for the council to deal with, despite the clear safety issues for their children, and local children and pedestrians.
Cones are now put on Hermitage road after extensive local pressure and council intervention. Unfortunately these have simply displaced the problem as parents now park on the school's emergency exits, and on the corner of Hermitage road and Templeton road. This is often with all 4 wheels on the pavement, which forces children to walk on a busy and dangerous road.
The council will occasionally send a parking attendant out, but this only temporarily resolves the issue. The police do not have the resources to help, understandably.
It is clear that the school is in a unique position to resolve this by communicating with parents and engaging with the local community, but have consistently refused to. They refuse to answer calls on this matter, and the reception staff are rude and aggressive.
Any suggestions on finding a solution to this issue?
I am hopeful that it can be resolved despite the inaction of the school, as it is not an issue outside other local primary schools where parents either walk, take public transport, or manage to park safely.

I wonder if they're confessing this behaviour and what their penance is?
Hermitage is in Seven Sisters ward. I’m sure local councillor, Claire Kober, would be happy to help
Is there a hint of sarcasm there Michael? I haven't found local councillors to be happy to help previously, but can certainly try to approach again.
Sarcastic! Never! ☺️
Sadly people don't seem to understand that parking is a council issue NOT a school issue. As a parent at St Marys and a resident of oakdale road I am getting rather cross at the seemingly constant negative comments on various fora about parking . The school HAS responded to residents concerns, regularily engages with parents about parking and takes action. I really do not expect our head to spend huge amounts of time dealing with traffic issues around the school. Does the head of chestnuts or crowlands schools patrol the streets checking who parks where?? There was a recent council consultation about traffic in this area and people could have commented on line or even be bothered to attend the meeting . Not once did anyone suggest the school ought to be responsible for parking. Lobby the council or look at their plans for traffic controls please it may help ease your frustrations with living in a built up urban area. No I dont think there will be a penance , but I think the least participants of this forum could at least expect not to have their faith mocked...just a thought.
This is nothing to do with faith.
I have regularly been outside both the other schools you have mentioned during drop off and collection time and have only seen parents parking in a safe manner. It really isn't an issue at those schools.
When parents consistently park on the school's emergency exits, blocking emergency access to the school, I think it is a school issue, as is the safety of the school's children who are forced to walk on the road.
Have parents been written to recently regarding this? The school refused to answer whether they have.
Thank you for the suggestion. I have tried this route, and they appear equally disinterested.
It's surely a school issue to encourage parents not to drive to school in the first place. This isn't the sticks where it's difficult to get around. Parents should be urged by the school to walk or bus their kids in.
I agree but I think this is almost a secondary issue, though obviously related. It is very difficult to get people's behaviour to change, and I'm not getting into the arguments surrounding driving to school. This isn't a traffic issue, but a parking one. All I am looking for is parents not to park on the pavement!
In an ideal world they would walk or use public transport, but clearly these individuals are unwilling to do that for whatever reason.
If this were a business in the area, where their visitors, deliveries and so on, blocked pavements and caused a hazard, I would imagine that as well as expecting traffic staff to go out and enforce, people living locally would also expect the business themselves to take responsibility for sorting out the problem. I can’t see why, because it’s a school, they should be treated differently.
Agreed. The local businesses manage to be considerate with their deliveries.
On a slightly separate note the parking on the pavement has also done significant damage to the street furniture.
