Where are local businesses advertising their jobs?

Found myself out of work right before Christmas and wondering about possibility of finding a local job with a smaller company that does not use agencies and does not have several weeks' long recruitment process.

Where would companies like that advertise their vacancies, apart from possibly Gumtree?

Anyone knows?

I am looking for an office based job (not sales).

Background in IT Training, user engagement, change support within new systems roll outs,etc but happy to consider anything interesting and stable (have been contracting for a while).

Security (SC) cleared too.

Any pointers where to look? Avoiding agencies, dealing directly with potential employers?

You'll be restricting yourself to a very small pool of jobs if you don't go through an agency. Almost everyone uses them, even the smallest companies.

I know you want office based but all you tend to see advertised directly these days are retail and restaurant and cleaning jobs. Some of the restaurants and shops in places like Crouch End advertise for waitresses and cashiers but you would be hard pressed to find anything else this way.

Perhaps you could check on Timewise, or Secsinthecity, or advertise on People Per Hour for freelance work?

I temped through agencies for several years and had nothing but good experiences, and also found my current perm role through an agency so I have only good experiences. Unless you have direct contact or a foot in the door already somewhere you would find it very difficult to find a good job with a decent salary by not dealing with an agency.

Only other place I’ve seen anything advertised recently is Lidl.

Yes I understand that, I did it for a couple of years after I got made redundant from a management career, tried temping for a bit then did some contracts in the city before deciding I wanted to work locally. I got a charity sector role in Hampstead but this was via an agency (fixed term contract working directly for them but intro was through agency). Also had a job in a shop in Stoke Newington, and did bar work. Immensely enjoyable but poorly paid so ended up back in the city.

Gumtree is not what it used to be on the job front, and in answer to your question of where do the local firms advertise their jobs, well they tend to use the agencies too. It makes sense, as if they take someone on who doesn’t work out they can just ask for someone else.

Places like Enfield and Barnet have a lot of offices (as opposed to round here where it tends to be retail/hospitality or estate agents) . You could try looking on local forums or newspapers in those locations.

Haha I long for the days of the hundreds of people in the office and the relative anonymity that gives, I work in a long established family firm now and have to deal with drama and divas and all the challenges they bring. We still have the hellish lighting (elfnsafety) and constant noise, it’s just more concentrated and less easy to escape!
