I wish I had checked this site before calling Neil Protheroe.
I called Neil as my shower had only hot water and we were burning. He came and charged me £45 to check shower cartridge. He said he would let me know when he'd receive the shower cartridge. Three months have gone by and the guy has disappeared. He has been ignoring my numerous phone calls and messages.
Unreliable and unprofessional. You have been warned.

That's really strange because I hate the complete opposite experience. While it was slightly hard finding a suitable time for him to come visit, when he did come, he was very thorough and identified the problem quickly at no charge (as there was no work required) despite spending a good hour investigating. For that, I was very grateful. What a shame you didn't have the same experience.
Has been good for me too on several occasions - happy to discuss or show his work.
I had the exact same experience. Said he'd come back and do the work on said date, but the time came and passed without any word from him. Completely unreliable when he chooses to be.
He came immediately when we had a problem and sorted it - admittedly it was simple and we just needed the right thing to unblock our plumbing and also i think there was a fairly hefty callout charge, but we know how to do it now and he gave us the things to use, allowing us to sort it ourselves next time
maybe he's just overcommitting himself at the moment, i used to know a good builder who did that too, or he's having his own problems? people do, you know...
We had exactly the same experience - totally unreliable, and actually left us in a worse state than when he arrived. e promised three days in a row to come back and fix it - so three days at home when we both work. I would never use him again - but Pete the leak I would recommend.
We found Neil through this site - and are very glad we did. He's a good, effective plumber - everything he's done for us works and our systems are running better now than they did before the problems arose. He also charges less than he quotes if the job takes less time than expected.
All this is very odd.
The only explanation I can think of is that there are two Protheroes - good guy Neil and his evil twin Lien .
It's like matter and anti-matter: the properties of anti-matter are exactly opposite to those of matter and so it is with the Protheroe twins.
Separated at birth after a big bang, Neil and Lien must never meet: if they do, they will instantly destroy each other, possibly creating a black hole into which all our bathroom fittings will disappear.
Or it's a case of Schrödinger's Cat Plumber, then - excellent AND dismal at the same time.
Just wanted to add my support of Neil to this thread. We have been using him a number of years now and he has always been great. I messaged him today as the radiator in my baby's room isn't working properly and he came round this evening. It was a very simple case of rebalancing the pressure but both my husband and I have no idea how to do that and so he showed us and didn't charge anything. What a gent. On other occasions he has done much bigger jobs for us and he has always been thorough, professional and helpful.
I recommend him without hesitation.

Neil did the same disappearance act to me!
I had blocked pipes under the sink. He came and did some temporary fix. Arranged to come again to sort it out permanently but did not show up on the said date. All my phone calls and texts were ignored. The man disappeared. I wouldn't mind if he'd just said he was very busy and couldn't come. At least I would have had the chance to look for someone else earlier. Letting me think that he was coming again and then avoiding all communication is just rude and unprofessional.
I actually used him once before. He did fix the problem but overcharged me for his work. When I pointed out to him that he charged me for more hours of work than he actually spent on it he reluctantly adjusted his invoice accordingly. Shame I didn't learn my lesson and used him for the second time (I was desperate I guess, couldn't find anyone else to come).
