Moped Crime public meeting in Muswell Hill
Hi all,
I’ve recently been selected as the new Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Tottenham, so firstly a formal hello!
I think most of you know me as a Tottenham resident and local parent and obviously a very passionate supporter of local issues.
Haringey has seen a huge increase in this type of crime across the borough and as I’m sure you will have seen in the many news reports and online forums it’s getting worse.
Our Highgate Councillor Liz Morris has written an open letter asking Sadiq Kahn to take more action to prevent and tackle moped crime.
We have organised a meeting with local police to ask what they are doing currently and what further action can be taken.

This meeting is over in Muswell Hill so may not work for everyone
If you feel we need to organise something over in this side of the borough please do let me know and I can look into arranging something.

Victim blaming. Ban mopeds or at least ban pillion passengers. Surely a moped with a pillion passenger is very good grounds for stop-and-search. I appreciate that the stop is a little trickier than kids at a tube station but still worth it, no?

That's not victim blaming - it's good sense.
I believe the police have been instructed not to pursue mopeds in case the little dears fall off and hurt themselves.

I think there is merit in this argument - lots of people have expensive phones and you wouldn't carry a wad of cash around in your hand... but I also agree with John, it shouldn't get to a point where people can't go about their daily business without feeling intimidated or worried.
These people are now entering cafes and targeting people working on lap tops, they have smashed shop windows and stolen items and a few weeks ago they were riding up and down the aisles of Waitrose in Holloway with the simple of aim of just frightening people. They are now also targeting parks in broad daylight and just a few streets from where I live some 12 year olds were targeted on their way home from school and ordered to hand over any cash/phones they may have had on them.
We were out with a crime survey this weekend in Crouch End and many people we spoke to said they were too afraid to go out on their own after dark. That just isn't acceptable in my book. Yes we need to be more vigilant and not display our phones but we also have a right to not be afraid to leave our homes.

Well at least if they keep their phones hidden they won't keep bumping into me.

Or at least grip it correctly.
I watched a friend the other day, holding the bottom of his phone with just their thumb and forefinger - easy to snatch.
I grip mine in a claw like grip which makes it a lot harder to just snatch out of my hand.

Take it into a shop or a doorway, not on open space on the pavement. That's police advice not mine.

Nobody is blaming the victim. We're trying to help you avoid becoming a victim by using a bit of common sense. I do hope you lock your door when you go out: you shouldn't have to but it's wise
