Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Worried about lock changes? Important information for Homes for Haringey Leaseholders of street properties

 I was contacted by a local resident who is a Homes for Haringey(HfH) leaseholder of a street property. This concerned a project HfH have initiated to change the locks of all communal doors to street properties. A leaseholder in another area has confirmed to me  this is happening to him as well. This is apparently to do with ensuring fire safety so undoubtedly has good intentions, but it seems the leaseholders of street properties with communal doors  weren't given any such explanation.

However, the implementation of this project is hugely worrying. From the description I read and the admittedly limited information  anyone might feel vulnerable and anxious about the safety of their property.

Her description of her experience shocked me and from this account of events this projects needs an urgent review. I contacted the Director of Homes for Haringey both by phone and by email asking for a full explanation and review. I am pleased to say he is acting promptly to review this and has suspended the programme to get things sorted.

I would appreciate hearing form any leaseholders in Harringay who have been contacted via the contractors, OpenView, about having their locks changed and what they have had to endure.

Thank you Zena. We also had a bad experience - a key was posted through the door last week with a letter telling us to leave our deadlocks unlocked for the whole month of November. Thank goodness we saw the letter and took the keys because the very next day they changed them. We were furious because what if we'd been away overnight and not been able to get the keys in time? We also don't understand why they couldn't make an appointment with us directly - like they do for other maintenance work. When I called HfH directly, they didn't even seem to know anything about the works and told me to call the contractor.

We look forward to hearing what HfH have to say about it all...

This was my experience with HfH. I live in a maisonette on an estate. They replaced my front door (I think their reason for doing so is flawed but that's a story for another day). Their contractor gave me one working day's notice of needing me to be there for them to measure my door. Tough - I had to work, I wasn't there. Then one working day's notice of when they were coming to install the door. I'm fine with them doing things with no notice when is an emergency, but when it's planned work they ought to give the required amount of notice (2 weeks). I held firm and was the last flat on my block to get my new front door.

Ironically I work in social housing and had to face a public meeting of people with similar complaints last week. Luckily the contractor's Resident Liaison Officer turned up so I didn't have to face the music.

Hi Zena, what constitutes 'a street property'. I am in  a block of flats where we already have a communal key and push button exit. 

Are you refering to individual houses with shared entries for flats?

Thanks for your reply, This project relates specifically to houses on streets and not, as I understand it, to blocks of flats. In other words, individual houses.
