Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I walked through H Passage this morning from Fairfax to the next road, towards the Salsibury direction(what is it again?) and was about to enter the passage when a tall man ahead of me stopped in the passage and was looking down and fiddling with something(?) and looked at me as if waiting for me... I therefore turned round and walked out of the passage and waited for a bit, then I peeked round the corner and he had walked a bit further and stopped and was looking in my direction again.... what was he up to and why? Was he lurking? Was he a flasher? Was he up to no good or was it all totally innocent?......... Women have to weigh all this up... I was not about to put myself in the position of being alone in the passage with no one else about, but him lurking there....anyone else see him? I waited for a bit and then looked again and he seemed to have gone.......... so carried on walking through.

Ah, but you're going to New York to shop this week .... dude!
When i'm in the bronx i'll try to remember how dangerous harringay is :-) he he
From the information you have given, it is impossible to say what his intentions were. Only you, being there at that moment and evaluating everything you were seeing of his appearance, body language and behaviour, the timing of when he stopped, and how he seemed to look at you, could make a guess as to what he was up to.

I think, however, that you were wise to err on the side of caution.
I thought what I'd said made it clear that there was something not quite right, about him a)having stopped, b) looking at me and c) fiddling about... no women in her right senses is going in to a narrow alley where no one else is about except a man who has stopped and is looking at her ... that would be foolish (unless I was a karate black belt with a gun in my back pocket...maybe, even then... who needs the aggro...)
You indicated that you were suspicious, but at the same time it seemed from what you said that you weren't sure and were asking for advice:

looked at me as if waiting for me

what was he up to and why? Was he lurking? Was he a flasher? Was he up to no good or was it all totally innocent?

I did conclude by saying that I thought how you responded was sensible.
Yes sorry wasn't meaning to sound critical of your response
One can never be sure unless you get up close enough and then may be too late -- its all split second, but you always (as a lone woman- and sometimes for men too) have to be very cautious in these kinds of situations...
For what it's worth, I always make a point of traveling down the passage if it's an option. I encourage all other people not scared of flashers etc to do the same. It makes it safer when we use it regularly.

That section of the passage is very wide (from Fairfax to Effingham) and is not like any other sections. In fact, I would have thought it was the 'safest' of them all.

I am appalled that you felt unsafe but really, I don't think you are helping matters by posting your worries online.
Thanks for posting this Sapphireblue - it's important to share these experiences so people can be more aware. It's not about never going out and staying at home, it's about being aware of your surroundings and the people you may come into contact with so you can take the appropriate precautions. You did exactly what I would've done, waited until he'd gone.
John how can you be appalled Sapphire felt unsafe? If any where in Harringay is dodgy for both men and women its the passage. I like using the passage because its quicker but if I see a lone person hanging about I go the long way round.

You did the right thing Sapphire, infact I wouldn't hang around for the guy to leave cos then I'd be hanging around too..
Gosh, just caught up with all these comments... my feelings from reading them all is that the main ones who realise how unsafe/vulnerable most women feel in places such as H Passage are other women... now there's a surprise!
Maybe I owe you an apology. I went down that bit of the passage this afternoon and noticed that it is the only bit with CCTV. Perhaps it is the most unsafe part of the passage after all.

You're right, it's women and young children who have the most to fear from the passage but as I said, those who aren't bothered should be using it as much as they can. Recently someone commented on a "thinking of buying in Green Lanes" post that they felt safe coming home alone at night because of all the people around.

Comparisons with the bronx are unhelpful. I feel much safer in London that I ever did in New Zealand which seems nonsense.

I'm not a fan of alerting the populace to things like this as it tends to promote the attitude that James was alluding to. Stay inside etc.

Ruth: yes, poor English - I don't think anyone should feel unsafe using the passage. It is hard to police as far as dog poo and litter goes but nutters prowling spend a lot of time there and should be picked up. I notice that the police do the odd drive by in the night slowing down to look down the passage and they should pick up any 'loiterers'.
