Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This small cluster of buildings stood close to the bottom of Muswell Hill until the 1880s. Closest to the camera is "The Pound"

The 1869 Ordnance survey map shows map shows this grouping with the pound clearly marked.

By the time of the 1893 map, all but the pound had been replaced with new housing (now 110 - 116 Priory Road). See the picture of the the pound linked above.

The cluster of cottages was called Friends Cottages, one assumes after the Freind family. As you can see Bootmaker George Friend lived No 1 Frinds Cottages.

Ah, so this isn't really Muswell Hill - at least, not the uphill bit!

No, not really: not as as far as I'm concerned.  I think the whole of Priory Road has always been Hornsey. What would you say?

No way would we have regarded Priory Road as anything other than Hornsey proper!

I note that nowadays estate agents try to describe everything as Crouch End if it's fairly flat and Muswell Hill if it isn't, for the cachet of the names. Oh my poor old 'Ornsey.

I haven't seen it yet as I'm away, but it has been reported that the new Co-op on Priory Road, opposite the old Pound, is called "Muswell Hill's Co-op". Admittedly, this end of Priory Road and the Warner Estate roads were in Muswell Hill ward until recently, but the boundary reorganisation restores them to Hornsey, where they belong.

Addresses were scantly recorded in the earliest censuses. Most of Hornsey was just Hornsey Village; likewise Muswell Hill was just Muswell Hill.

Following my comment the other day, I was surprised to notice a couple of days later, when looking at the 1841 census that all of Priory Road was included in the record as as Muswell Hill. The excerpt below includes the Warner family of The Priory.

Would this be roughly where that little community orchard now is?

That’s right. Just near there

I can't believe how much water and how many bridges there were around the area - it must have been the Venice of North London...
