Gaol and hard labour- should jolly well think so too! The Railway- was that at the top of Burgoyne? Or someplace else?

Yes, top of Burgoyne. It's now the Shelton "Hotel".

Thought so.... rougher than rough probably.

Wonder if the pub at the bottom now the OAE was there as well- 2 pubs on the same street, drinkers heaven

Cough, splutter!  It pains me to  say this in the circumstances but The Railway Hotel was always on Wightman  Road. The Shelton is at 60-62 Wightman, but if Ian wants it for Burgoyne he's welcome to it.

Ruth, I think we had a discussion here somewhere about the OAE's recent antecedents: Mortimer - car showroom - not sure if we got back much further than the 1970s. It would be nice but unlikely to discover that the 'Gladstone' stood there at the sign of the Oak & Axe or even The Fallen Woman about 1890.

You're right, Wightman Road it is and not Burgoyne. Apologies. Intrigued about the Fallen Woman. Probably some searching around old maps in the archives and the like would bring something to light. If I had a bit of time would do that.
