I came across this postcard sent to an address in Green Lanes at the start of the last century and thought it an evocative reminder of what was a highlight of many Londoners' lives.
There's a nice piece on Londoners hop picking in The Mail from a couple of years ago.

Back in the 60s I had the pleasure of living in the area around Paddock Wood and East Peckham in Kent where there were and had been extensive hop gardens. The wonderful drying houses - 'oast houses' are still a major tourist draw and my boss lived in one at a place called Plaxtol:
The Whitbread farm at Paddock Wood. If its still Whitbread!
It seems to be privately owned these days, but closed this year?
Our Mum regularly threatened to take us 4 kids into the 'country' on hop picking holidays over a number of years from mid 50's till early 60's. It was generally seen to be a cheap option for holidays but she never managed to build up enough spare cash to have one. It really sounded exciting but over the years I've learnt that it was a quite hardy experience.
That's great - I love the slightly condescending commentary! Love the way he says South London as if they could afford to come from further afield. When I used to visit PW in the 60s as a young hack it had hardly changed and there were still some itinerant pickers.
