Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone used Zipcar/Streetcar? I'm wondering if it is as good as their advertising suggests. Is it easy to get a local car without having to book weeks in advance?

I've been pretty lucky as only ever needed them at short notice and have always managed to get the Fairfax Road one, v occasionally Hewitt (which is nearer), but Cavendish often available when I look, and I've had no problems extending if I've been stuck in traffic.

I think you'll struggle to book Cavendish in future - it seems to have gone too.

If its the case that cars are being removed then we need to ask what is going on from Haringey council which has an agreement with the company regarding parking spaces etc. This is the entry re car clubs from the Haringey website which states where all cars are located. Major changes such as the removal of cars need to be queried:

Here's some contacts: Transport Planning team on 020 8489 1492. Alternatively you can email frontline@haringey.gov.uk

Our local cllrs might also like to enquire if there have been any changes to policy regarding car clubs and car availability

According to the current website there are 4 following cars in the immediate ladder/Gardens area - Hewitt Rd, Fairfax Rd, Wiloughby Rd, Sussex Gardens. All VW, £6 an hour or £59 per day. The Cavendish one is still listed on the link that Liz provided.

It may well not be valid anymore but if anyone is interested in joining there is a half-price membership offer being quoted on Haringey's car club page here.

Someone needs to update council website with correct info clearly! Have dropped a line to cllrs

Thank you for alerting me to this.  I will take it up with the council and find out what the current situation is.

Hi everyone,

Jonathan from Zipcar here. Can I just clear up any confusion? Nothing out of the ordinary is happening here and certainly there has been no change in policy here from ourselves. January is traditionally our quietest month of the year when the UK tends to hibernate. It also comes off the back of a time when every single one of our cars was out over Christmas. We therefore use the time to sell and replace a number of cars (and we are, following feedback, reducing the percentage of BMW 1 Series in our fleet in favour of more, cheaper VW Golfs) and repair vehicles and get them into shape following any mishaps over Christmas. You will therefore, if you are beady eyed, see more car inflows and outflows during the month. In no area though (as most acknowledge on this board) should you struggle to get availability when you need it or have to travel far to get a car.

In relation to a wider point about number of vehicles versus Islington: it must be remembered that this concept has grown enormously in the last few years. We have been in Islington longer than Haringey and therefore awareness and demand is greater there. As demand continues to grow (and this has to be for weekday and weekend usage as the scheme is not viable without both), then we will continue to work with the council (who have been very supportive) to introduce more cars.

I hope this useful but if anyone wants to ask any more specific questions then feel free: uklocations@zipcar.co.uk

Jonathan

Thanks for dropping by and clearing things up, Jonathan.

Yes, thanks for that Jonathan. I hadn't realised I was just confused about your locations team quite clearly telling me that they wouldn't be replacing the cars which were removed from my area.

Where are you based Clare?

Jonathon thanks for your contribution.

Can I suggest that if anyone has any more specific questions about ZipCar/Streetcar that, rather than email the Zipcar representative, the question is posted here so that both question and any answer are shown publically. I've learnt things here thanks to the sharing of information.
