Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

On Friday we noticed that a one pint bottle of whole milk we'd bought in YH the previous evening was obviously fermenting and about to pop. Looking more closely we saw its "use by" was 06 Sept, so it had been out of date when we bought it.
I took it back and agreed with a staff member I could change it for a new one, but on looking at the stock I found it was all out of date.
I drew this to the attention of the staff member and for good measure explained that the stock should be cleared as it was illegal to sell food beyond the use by date. She silently gave me my money back. No apology, no "thanks for the help" or even a smile. (Not that the last is untypical )
Today, incredibly, the out of date milk is still there. You can choose between 3rd, 4th, 6th or 7th September.
Could the milk be harmful rather than just unpleasant? Should I call Trading Standards? I have pictures.

Out of date chicken is a no no as is milk but you will notice that straight away as its sour. Having seen a rat running around the bakery section in broad daylight, I never shop there. Absolutely disgusting. THe baker I think just smiled and said nothing. The bakery used to bake some nice stuff but I'm afraid I will not go there again. I might do in the furure if fix all the problems abd there are a few. How do you know when they have fixed the rat proble, HC should be on the case and close the place down until the issues are resolved properly. That means closing any holes bigger than a pencil diameter. And putting wire mesh or wire wool on smaller holes. Every single one. Not some cowboy job done by a few cowboy builders. When its fixed and the food is guaranteed fresh and they have done a deep clean of the premises, inform me and I might go there again. Like the awnings though. HC is neglecting its duty to the people of Haringey - this may be the worst case but I doubt its the only.

I've stopped shopping at YH because of the attitude of the staff. (I realise it's a boring job on the tills... but...). A thank you should not be out of the question. At YH it would appear it is.

I went in a few times when the shop opened but what you said put me off....there was hardly any communication between me and them, they'd just put their hand out when they expected me to put money in while they carried-on a conversation with the person on the next till. Awful. I could never understand why there was always so much praise for it on here.

The milk may not cause illness (it would be too horrible to drink) the real issue is the seeming lack of concern and the poor food safety culture it demonstrates the shop has. Where else in the shop are they not taking the right amount of care?

I have recently said a few times to my wife that I reckon Yasar must make its money by getting the stuff that is left at the end of the day from the wholesale fruit and veg market on the cheap as a lot of the food they sell is often below par. I went in to get peppers the other day and nearly all of them were wrinkly (like they were drying up and turning). This often happens sadly.
Its a shame as I like Yasar, and I really miss the veg shop opposite that is now the illegal 3 fronted kebab house. Their veg was always great.

Potatoes from Cyprus are very good quality, as are their other veg and their citrus fruit and grapes.

I think that they get a lot of their fruit and veg produce on a Thursday as it often fresh then but can be 'less fresh' as the week goes by.

We stopped buying milk there a few years back because we had a run of milk going off before it's sellby date. My husband thinks their refrigeration isn't as good as it could be. I've shopped there for years but am tending now to go to All Star or Doslar if I can instead.
Anyone who hasn't been to All Star - do go. Fantastic stock of Italian things at the back.

The only thing I specifically go to Yasar Halim to buy is their filo pastry which, now I come to think of it, has not been up to par the last few times I've bought it. Old, so the leaves are already split or stuck together. If I knew of a good alternative source I'd be there like a shot. I can't stand supermarket filo or even the frozen stuff that Greek shops sell as they use some additive that I am sensitive to the taste of.
About a million years ago I used to cross London to buy fresh filo from a long-defunct Greek patisserie on a corner on the lefthand side going up. It was the best stuff ever and I've never found the like.
