Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have been having some problems with Yahoo recently. It didn't recognise my password(which was correct) and after going through security put me on the new 'key' entry. Now I have tried to set up a second email address and couldn't as I got caught in a loop. I phone Yahoo helpline and went through a long process involving the remotely controlling my computer. The result was that my yahoo had been hacked and was connected to several foreign connections. The solution was to sign up to their 'level 5' security which would cost a fair bit. Is this a scam? It seemed to be a legit Yahoo number (uk freefone) or at least it was more or less at the top of a Google search. I made my excuses when I heard the price and disconnected the link. What now? Any ideas?

From https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN6349.html:

"Yahoo customer support is always free of charge

Assistance from Yahoo Customer Care may come via email, chat, social media, help articles, or our Yahoo Help Community forums. Whether you forgot your Yahoo password, can't sign in to Yahoo Mail, or need help with another Yahoo product or service, Yahoo will NOT ask you to pay for support.

Yahoo phone number - If you see a Yahoo customer service number posted online, it isn't Yahoo support.

Things Yahoo customer service won't do

  • Charge you to assist you in any way (reset your Yahoo password, provide technical support, or address abuse or Yahoo account security concerns).
  • Request to remotely connect to your computer for any support-related request.
  • Support or endorse third-party offerings that provide customer support for a fee.

If you paid for help with your Yahoo account, you weren't working with Yahoo Customer Care. Contact your financial institution to report the charge as soon as possible and take these steps to review your Yahoo account's security."

So yes sorry but it seems you have been scammed. Assuming you have a recent backup of your data files I suggest reformatting the hard disk and reinstalling the operating system. You don't know what malware was installed when you gave them remote control. Also from another PC, or once you have a clean install, you should systematically go through every user account you own and change the password. You should probably alert your bank if you do any online banking etc.

Thanks for that! The problem is that I can't seem to get hold of anyone at Yahoo to help with my connections problems so that means there is a gap in the market. Yahoo just take you thru software without any chance of actually communicating.

The Yahoo phone line is a scam operation.

I used to pay for my yahoo account in order to prevent ads and spam, but when it came up for renewal this year I was unable to do this and then tried to phone them and got through to that number. AS soon as they tried it on with the £60.00 fee, I put the phone down and TRIED (oh, how I tried) to report it to Yahoo.

I got no response of any kind at all. I even wrote a letter on an A3 sheet of paper and sent it to them in the hope someone would contact me so I could let them know of the problem.

And when I was finally able to renew my account, I saw the annual costs had been trebled, so I now put up with ads until such times as I can change suppliers.

Yahoo actually has a customer accessible telephone number?!!!

That is news to me.

It obviously is a scam.

I am in several Yahoo groups, one of which I am the 'admin' on. It has been a while since I can't get into any of them. I've given up on this company's products. Since they changed the Yahoo groups format some years ago nothing works properly. It was so badly done - the format became clunky and less user-friendly, so was completely counterproductive and fobbed off many, many users.

Of course they did it to allow more ads to be pushed into our faces and I fully understand their need to make revenue - 'there is no such thing as a free lunch'. But the amateurish and clumsy way in which this was done and unbusinesslike/lack of response to complaints  did/does not augur well for them.

I've given up on Yahoo.
