I ordered a book from Amazon ay 9.30 am on Friday. It was on my doorstep at 6.30 Saturday.
Perhaps Amazon could buy up Royal Mail ?
Im trying not to buy from Amazon, but with 4 packages stuck with RM, might have to reconsider!
Delivery drivers used to spend a lot of time not moving because they were a component of traffic.
Sure we all use Amazon sometimes but The All Good Bookshop on Turnpike Lane can get any book available usually the next day, you can order online or by phone and talk to a real live person, and you can collect from the shop on Turnpike Lane or they will deliver it locally for free by bicycle.
And they pay their taxes and don't have questionable business practices , or poor employee conditions.
but do they have the resources to take over the Royal Mail delivery functions, which was my light-hearted suggestion ?
Amazon don't - and will never - deliver letters. They deliver (or get delivered) boxes. Their own boxes. Only.
Nor do Netflix and the like deliver news, topical discussion, local news, unlike another beleaguered public body, the BBC. They just deliver their own box(ed) sets/streaming. Only.
Relative resources, to answer your question:
Royal Mail market capitalization: £1.7 billion.
Amazon market capitalization: $1.2 trillion.
We need to seriously begin to evaluate our choices and become conscious consumers. You may be able to get a book delivered to you within 24 hours, but what greater impact does that have? Reports suggest that current billionaire Jeff Bezos is set to be the first trillionaire! Not one individual should possess such wealth. Even his current wealth should not be possessed by one person. In 2018 he gave 0.1% of his wealth to philanthropic institutions. 0.1%! Don’t shop with Amazon. They are not always cheaper and they will replace all smaller businesses. Do we really want one company controlling the market?
They also know what you are buying from non-amazon-market-place-vendors and alledgedly then can enter that particlar market if it is successful and squeeze the little sellers/producers out.
If anything we need anti trust action to be taken against such large operators so that the benefoits do not go to only one person. Same for the large IT operators.
My friend has Alexa and the adverts between music were advertising Amazon “craft” furniture. Trying to wedge out artisans! Their greed knows no bounds.
Alexa (and Siri)....ah yes...'spyware' of sorts.
I am indeed a Luddite. Haviing read about Winston when I was very young I try to limit my exposure.
With this COVID pushing us closer to a Brave New World well past 1984 I wonder where it will all end up?
The East India Company were eye-wateringly wealthy and all but founded the British Empire. I wonder what the 21st century equivalent will turn out to be.
(Of course it all went wrong for the EIC and the Government bailed it out in and pretty much took over.....there's another possibility).
