Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

World's biggest pear tree? Advice please...

This great hulking menace is in next door's garden. I estimate it to be about 80ft high and it blocks the light from half of my garden and drops thousands rotten pairs in autumn, which then means we can't sit out because of falling fruit, and also a massive fly problem as we can't pick it up fast enough there are so many of them when we get back from work they're already going off.

The problem is made worse by the amount of ivy growing on it, which makes it a lot wider than it is, so it blocks more light, and the fact that it is growing diagonally over my garden. I can't remove any more of the overhanging branches as they are too tall, and next door is a rogue HMO so nobody there is bothered. I've managed to track down the agents and emailed them but they don't care either. I don't know who the owner is or how to contact them, but I suspect they won't care either.

Anyone got any advice for how to proceed with this? It's like having a massive cloud looming over us and I'm sure it's leaning twice as much as it was even a couple of years ago, which makes me afraid it might fall down and smash through the house.

Might be worth considering contacting Haringey in the first place to find out if it's covered by a tree protection order. You can email them below with the details of the address it's growing from
planningenforcement@haringey.gov.uk
If it is they may well know how to get in contact with the property owner.

Thank you, I will do so. I doubt there would be a protection order on a pear tree, least of all one that is about 65 feet overgrown! You never know though with Haringey.

Oh gosh I feel for you.  We have the same issue with a huge Leylandia.  The owner promised to do something about it, then put the property up for sale and still promised to do something with the estate agent being aware of the issues but nothing happened.  There is now a buyer and we are dying for them to move in so that we can find out whether the new owners will do something and whether this big estate agency in Harringay withheld information or told them about the dispute.

Don't know if this applies to you but there is a bit of obscure legislation on high hedges. Local authorities can act as a mediator/enforcer in some cases

If you haven't already, maybe decide on the size and shape you can live with and get a quote from a local tree surgeon to prune it back severely and then keep it in trim?  You can help organise the urbanharvest folks nearby to come with a net and shake off fruit every year to spread the bounty around.

That might help the new buyer come to the right decision?
