Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

It seems the council are pushing this quite hard. If it happens, will they really rebuild the vue cinema ?

I suspect, Michael, that her observations and insights are rich in lots of ways I didn't appreciate until fairly recently when I reread "Dark Age Ahead" (2004) after seeing an article by Cllr Joe Goldberg claiming her as a supporter of what he's doing. And also reread "Death and Life of Great American Cities" (1961), to realise once again why she remains a sound guide for what makes a safe, attractive, well used city park. And for many other aspects of successful city living.
As you probably know, in the intervening forty years she wrote books and articles, and campaigned. I very much regret that I never thought of finding some way go and listen to her give a talk - which I'm sure she must have done.
If she'd lived a little longer we might have hada Ted talk. Or maybe there's or video or podcast or two around which I don't know about?

If anyone has some old unwanted copies of her books they want to sell or give away, do let me know. I keep lending - in effect giving away - copies of "Death & Life..." And I suspect I'll want to do the same with "Dark Age Ahead" and others. (That's the one with some notes critiquing the planning of the metro.)

The outcome of the Crossrail 2 project has been published

Broad findings for Haringey are;

Support for the Turnpike Lane route
Little support for the Wood Green route
Concerns over a proposal for a ventilation shaft in Downhills Park

Michael, many thanks for the link.

The survey results are consistent with the survey undertaken by Haringey Liberal Democrats

The Lib Dems backed the Turnpike Lane/Alexandra Palace station route for Crossrail 2 because we want to see the Palace flourish. We also believe Turnpike Lane needs regeneration and provides better interchanges, making it a better choice for Crossrail 2.

That is a view very clearly backed by local residents who responded to the Crossrail 2 consultation.

In the Crossrail 2 consultation:

  • 85% of comments received about a Crossrail 2 Station at Turnpike Lane were supportive
  • 80% of comments received about a Crossrail 2 Station at Alexandra Palace were supportive
  • In comparison only 28% of comments received about a Crossrail 2 Station at Wood Green were supportive, with 68% of comments expressing concerns

The results are very similar to our Lib Dem survey of local residents which found 78.5% of local residents who responded, backed the Alexandra Palace/Turnpike Lane route and only 21.5% backed the Wood Green Station route.

I continue to believe the Council has wasted time and effort in promoting the Wood Green so-called "option" that was intended to promote property development in a relatively small area. That ill-advised, blinkered approach has, I believe, led to confusion and complication and it assisted Lord Adonis' recommendation to delay the entire north-west spur.

Don't know if the Wood Green/Turnpike Lane spur was a major contributor to a delay Clive. If you read the report the biggest fuss is happening in Wandsworth and Chelsea. As both have Conservative members of Parliament Lord Adonis had to make sure that both they and their constituents were very, very happy.
