Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Why Did Haringey Council Sanction another Gambling/Casino Gaming Shop On Green Lanes?

I'm totally perplexed by this and it’s truly horrible that these sorts of shops still get green lights to open up when they feed gambling addiction and attract the worst sort of people to the area.

A new Admiral Casino is opening near the old post office, we already have a similar arcade shop opposite Mums down the road which is always empty from what I've seen.

How do gambling business's still get sanction by the council? Especially in these times when we know how much damage these places do to peoples lives, it’s just awful and we should all complain about it

I hearty dislike this too but it’s an instance where Haringey have no choice but to approve it.  It was a betting shop and is becoming an adult gaming centre.  Planning law, which is decided nationally, allows that.

I certainly am not a fan of LBHaringey. But in their defence , from my experience they have tried to not approve these gambling dens (that is what they are - extractive predatory establishments).

But it is the rather the « build back better » sleazy cohort that continues to loosen planning rules instead of making them more restrictive, who are the culprits. Although they did change some rules and restricted the amount one can spend on a single bet, and this did have the effect of closing down some betting shops, we now have these adult gaming centres (euphemism) popping up everywhere and mostly in deprived areas.

Just to add in the council's favour....from Haringey website

New policy to protect residents from risks associated with gambling

But, I as I wrote earlier, the national policy has to change. Don't forget that the Tories want a planning free for all and only relented when they lost a by-election in what had seemed to be a safe seat. What they subsequently did was called "window dressing".

This came on top of the changes to planning use classes.

This means that for some places (like Tottenham) cash-rich, casino & gambling businesses could outbid less-well-off independent businesses for empty units without needing to go thorugh change of use procedures which previously protected us, but this only  to a certain extent.
