Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Where do the road names come from?

Apologies if this has already been flogged to death in the past, but I am curious to know the origin of the road names used in harringay, particularly along the ladder. Someone told me there was a connection to Admiral Nelson but could not provide any additional detail.

It's been flogged to death :-)

As far as I know, nobody has come up with a convincing theory except for a few roads at the Finsbury Park end wwhere they seem to have been named after novels by Disraeli - Endymion, Venetia, Tancred etc

I know everything has said that this is has been done to death - but putting the names of the roads in the centre of the ladder into Google (the one's built in 1900/1901) I happened across a list of names of people killed in mining accidents in the UK that year. See http://www.cmhrc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/lodts10.htm. Looking into it further Warham, Hewitt, Allison and Seymour all seem to have been involved in the same accident..................coincidence?

I know that Williamson Road the one leading from Green Lanes between McDonalds and Homebase to Sainsbury is named after old Willimason Potteries on the same site. It made bricks in early/late 19th century to supply the builders for houses that make up The Ladder. His grandson a shy retiring man lives on the Ladder.
