Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi. I am looking to set up a fairly simple web site to host some information about our rental property in the Alps (this is the Facebook site my wife set up recently- https://www.facebook.com/androsace24).

Two questions:

  • Does anyone have any experience with hosting a web site, who are the best/cheapest hosts to use? The site is only going to be simple, with little other than text based descriptions and images.
  • A few folks have suggested I use Word Press to prepare the web page. I have no experience of Word Press, and am not sure if this is the right route to get what ever functionality I need (http://wordpress.com/). Is it a package I download or a web site I use to prepare the relevant web pages? Is this the correct entry point as it were?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I like Wordpress a lot but isn't it a bit of overkill for a site with:

'little other than text based descriptions and images.'

Some domain registrars offer a one-page website for free, so if yours does, I would simply use that, but why have a website at all?

Just make your domain name go directly to your facebook page and use 'sticky' posts (that stay at the top of your Facebook page even when you add new content) to highlight the key info - location, facilities, price and availability.

It would seem unlikely that your website would ever get to the top on the google list of search results (sites that list it for rent like TripAdvisor will always come first), but even if it did, would that help much?  There's only one, so it's not as if potential renters will be tempted away. Presumably, nobody will ever google it, they'll click on links that point to it, then bookmark those links.

Why have a domain name at all?  Consider using a free short name - something like bit.ly/androsace and pointing that to your facebook page or maybe even your TripAdvisor entry.

Then put your effort into the posts on Facebook below the 'sticky' ones if you have news, renters experiences etc.

Just my 2p's worth...
