Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Harringay desperately needs a traffic and parking review, we have got to the stage that the amount of traffic coming down the ladder roads really needs to be dealt with. I will be writing to officers and the lead member because we can no longer I believe sustain this inequitable distribution of traffic in the area.

This morning on my way to work I witnessed some amazing community action and spirit from businesses on Green Lanes. An elderly man was hit by a car turning right out of Pemberton Rd. Whilst I didn't see the accident I did see the shop owners come out and one young woman from the jewellers recorded the driver who we initially thought had abandoned his car and fled the scene. The driver did come back as he had gone to get help, however the locals were not taking any chances. I looked like a leg injury and the police assured me he would be ok, however it could have been far worse.

I am receiving emails from residents angry at the level of traffic coming down their roads which is impacting on their houses and quality of lives. I would really be interested to hear more residents views on the issue.

I agree. Gate Wightman. I've always fancied living in a Gated Community but couldn't bear the thought of migrating to the Gardens or South Africa.

John, cars queued back at every Garden junction and held up the traffic as they moved on or over GL. They would have to do precisely the same thing bus lane or no bus lane. At least now they are controlled by lights at the junction with Salisbury Road.

Gating off Wightman seems like a hard thing to get to happen though. Gating off Frobisher might be a bit easier and that would sort out 25% of the Ladder traffic, and there is even the money set aside to do it now. Hopefully Emine can help make that work have a good outcome for us.

Does anyone have any idea what this funding is linked to? I assume it is in additional to the funding allocated to the Frobisher junction improvement works.

To add some data to this debate - across almost all of Harringay, the majority (>50%) of households have zero cars or vans (based on 2011 census data). So, most of us don't have a car...

You're all addressing the wrong question. The real answer is to drastically reduce the number of vehicle movements. I suggested how to do this some years ago but the solution seemed to be too drastic for the HOL community

Oh, go on then.....

It's fuel rationing. Allow each vehicle enough coupons to give 5000 miles per annum at 50 mpg.

This would favour the use of fuel-efficient cars and discourage driving half-a-mile to Sainsbury's.

It would encourage car-sharing and the use of public transport. Bus, Underground and Rail services would operate on Christmas / Boxing day as they should be doing now ( I have a friend who lives in Edmonton and will be expected to turn up for work in Potters Bar on both days - but how ? She can't afford taxis  )

Sales reps do not need to drive hundreds of thousands of miles to visit customers. There would be special allowances for district nurses ( if there are any left ) and the like, and for transport companies.

and I could trade in 4000 miles-worth a year by taking huge chunks of cash off 4x4 drivers. Win!

I can do that because of the Freedom Pass. Something like that has to be part of the equation - or back to Ken's Fares Fair.  But could the tubes + buses cope? 

I remember it very nearly happening here. Here's an image of a petrol ration book that was issued to every motorist in November 1973, in the wake of the 1973 energy crisis, though they weren't activated.

And in the long term as oil supply declines.....

That caption needs correcting, they did not bring in petrol rationing, they just planned for it.  I've got one of those books in the back of my Car file somewhere.
