Wanted: working camcorder for a student film project

Bit of a long shot but does anyone have a working camcorder/small video recorder in a bottom drawer that they would be willing to give away to a student for a film project ?

Serious question but can't they record the footage on a half decent phone? That way they can easily use it as a digital file and add effects to it in post production.
