Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all,

I am not going to use these three things in conjunction with each other... but I've just bundled them all in to one post for ease. Thought it would be worth asking the good people of Harringay:

  1. Does anyone have a jig saw (tool, not puzzle) that I might be able to borrow for a day? I need to cut a doorway in a shed wall. They're not too expensive so I could buy one, but I don't think I'll use it more than once, so I thought I'd check here first.
  2. I've been searching for bread flour for about a week and can't find any. Was just wondering if anyone had any sitting in a cupboard from Before Corona, that they don't think they'll use and that I could buy?
  3. Gravel. I just wondered if it was the kind of thing anyone might have left over/getting in the way after a garden makeover? it's for a garden path. Happy to pay the going rate for it.

We would of course arrange safe distance, non-contact pick up of any of these.

Thanks, hope you're all doing okay.

The Turkish shop just up from the Haringey general store (the hipster store) on Green Lanes has massive bags of Marriages. Like 20kg or so. I could split one with you but I don’t know how I’d get it home.

I'm game. Errrrr, maybe one of us could take home and decant half into paper/plastic bags? I don't know how big they are but I could try fitting one in my bike pannier or just rest it on the saddle.

I'd be happy to split my half with someone else too if anyone wanted, just so it seems less stockpiley...

Try and see if the bakery @ Yasha will sell you a smaller amount...?

Will try this too, thanks Justin

This is the one, Marriages Golden crust, probably too big for a pannier. Having just googled it I don't know if it would be any good for what I bake, sorry!

Having said that, I'd probably sell my dog for a crust of bread, in a months time.

I'd be up for some flour sharing. Will hopefully be driving past harringay local stores later so will stop off if it's still open.

WhatsApp me if you want in on 07968 603 877. My starter has been very neglected so will probably want to hang on to 3 or so kgs...

Further googling suggests it will work with slow leavening, so I would be happy to split a bag 3 ways, I'm working from home, I'll whatsapp you now. There were 4 or 5 bags, plenty to go around

Help me out, what is 'slow leavening'?

I use a starter I grew myself a while ago, (flour, water, wait for yeast to grow in it, then keep feeding with more flour and water) and that activates my dough which I let rise slowly for a day or so, partly at room temp, partly in the fridge.

Takes less kneading as the starter has more time to break down the flour, tastes better, quite dense and chewy.

Yesterday;

Got you. I have made my own bread in the past and I thing Hugh Fernly-Far-Far has an approach that takes two days, he makes a sponge. Same thing, right?

Yes, sounds like it. Can be a faff over a weekend, but for some reason I think I'm going to have some time on my hands.
