Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I’m not sure when it started, but the W5 now starts and stops its route from Stroud Green/Harringay library (bus sign says ‘Harringay Station’) for the next 10 days.

Due to road works at the southern end (abutting Endymion-Upper Tollington roads) the southern two thirds of Oakfield Road is not open for through traffic. Tonight Marlborough Highway and Cadent (gas) were on site. The area is festooned with road-closed and diversion signs …

Took if from Harringay Station this morning and there is a massive diversion in the Archway direction.  We went all the way to Hornsey Library then turned up Crouch Hill, along Tollington Park, Hornsey Road and Hornsey Rise then it went out of service at the Clock Tower.

There was no announcement that it was going that way because anyone heading for the Clock Tower could have just got off at the library and walked through.  Also no announcement that it would terminate at the Clock Tower as we could have got off at Crouch Hill station and got the train to Upper Holloway.

No buses for Archway from the Clock Tower stop so I and a woman who was also headed for The Whittington had to share an Uber to get to our appointments on time.  Coming back from Archway the bus went on its normal route but terminated at Harringay station where there were three other buses were already parked up.

If you’re heading for The Whittington I’d strongly advise to take a different route and allow extra time.  I made it with seconds to spare.

Yes, I got it from Sainsburys yesterday (or was it Sunday?) and got caught unawares at the Crouch Hill/Broadway junction. I would have got off if I hadn't been reading! The driver actually stopped at a passenger's request just after we turned left there (instead of right). I think those roadworks are due to finish this Friday.

The bus will likely be on diversion until at least September due to Thames Water finally replacing all the water pipes in the Crouch Hill area.

Yes, that’s the other diversion. There seems to have been another somewhere on Endymion Rd (hence the curtailed route). However, seeing a bus at Sainsburys yesterday I asked & was told the bus is back to its original start point but that there is still a diversion. I understood that to mean a diversion this end, as well as the Crouch End diversion (although while TfL say the W5 has no current issues, the map on the same page includes the CE diversion…) Top Tip - If you’re going to CE, get off the bus at the CE library & walk round!

New W5 diversions: not starting at Sainsbury's, and round the houses in Crouch End. Details:

ENDYMION ROAD, N4: Until 18:00 Friday 13 March, Route W5 will end and begin journeys at Harringay Station. There will be NO SERVICE between Harringay Station and Harringay Sainsbury's. Please allow additional time for your journey.

CROUCH HILL, N8: Route W5 is on diversion towards Archway from 07:00 on Wednesday 11 March until 18:00 on Friday 27 March due to Thames Water works. Buses are diverted via Ferme Park Road, Tottenham Lane, Elmfield Avenue, Middle Lane and Park Road, missing the stops from Hail & Ride Weston Park to Crouch End Broadway 'CD'.

It looks to me that it will NOT call on The Broadway, being diverted along Middle Lane and Park Rd instead.

Another change! Oh well.

Btw, why is ‘Hail and Ride’ simply a normal bus route without physical stops - but WITH specific stopping places? It’s never made sense to me. It functions exactly as a ‘normal’ bus route, so there is no difference to passengers.

It’s maddening.  Unless you know where the invisible bus stops are you’ve no hope!

I’ve tried to ask TfL a couple of times about this but there’s just deafening silence. Their website USED to state the bus would stop when requested (which - at least on another H&R route I used several years ago - was the case), but last time I checked they’d removed all references to that (with the exception of one obscure route map that was hidden away).

Bit of a radical idea Mark but if it is NOT stop and pick up on request stick a bus stop sign on the nearest lamppost.

Tried giving some online feedback. Got this. Twice. Gave up.

I’ll try when I get a chance.
