Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Volunteers needed to help deliver environmental education sessions at Railway Fields Nature Reserve!

Environmental Education Volunteer Officer

Do you want to help children in Haringey connect with nature? Would you like experience in Outdoor/ Environmental Education?

The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) recognise the value of green spaces to local people and recognise that outdoors is the best place to play, relax and to learn. We are looking for volunteers to help run our interactive environmental education sessions at Railway Fields for local primary schools across Haringey.

Railway Fields Nature Reserve is based in the heart of Haringey, off Green Lanes, alive with wooded areas, a minibeast trail, two meadows, a wetland and a pond. We host school visits from Haringey primary schools which take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

This is a brilliant opportunity to gain confidence and skills in the field of environmental education. You will receive support from the Schools Project Officer and will be informed of any relevant training opportunities.

You will be:

  • Preparing and giving out basic equipment such as wildlife keys, spotters sheets and magnifiers, helping the children to understand and use them effectively.
  • Interacting with the children, enthusing and informing them about the wildlife they encounter.
  • Leading children around the reserve, helping them engage and understand with the trees, plants and creatures around them.
  • Leading focused games and activities that will help the children learn
  • Helping develop educational resources and ideas for activities

We are looking for a commitment of two days per week but can allow a level of flexibility. An interest or knowledge of wildlife is very welcome but not required. All volunteers will need to have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service, formally CRB) check before they can work with the children.

If you are interested in volunteering, or require further information, please get in touch! Contact Jo Goldsmid on 07740899681or email j.goldsmid@tcv.org.uk

I joined in with Liz, Deb, Bob, Keith, Greg and Paul, they made it all a fun and engaging experience this summer. I looked forward to every session, I feel we managed to form a very committed and freindly team.

Together we introduced 900 children to mini beasts, micro habitats, insect catching and pond dipping, revealing the bio diversity of Railway Fields.

Jo Goldsmid, (our education coordinator,) was born for this role, she is so encouraging and highly engaging. It was an inspiration how Jo interacted with the children, and made the whole experience fun for everyone.

Volunteering really opened my eyes, and Jo is the best thing to happen to outdoor education in Haringey, (who made all the sessions feel like teamwork,) great leadership, we even did an informal review at the end, not because we had to, but because we were all so keen to share our experiences.
