Is there anybody else who currently suffers with Virgin Media broadband issues?

I mean people living on N4 or N8 areas.

You can't guarantee the delivery of any service you buy, but where there is choice, you can take care selecting your provider and leave them if things don't measure up to expectation. I have that choice now. I'm hesitating both because of cost and because if Virgin deliver their promised service it would be better than anything else available. 

We used to have problems with wifi weekly (usually on Sunday nights it just disappeared for an hour) until we updated names on the contract which usually means you are getting new router. So after we've installed new box there haven't been any problems. I am in N4.

I got an email the other day saying the speed was being upgraded in the area which may be why there are problems.

I don't tend to have problems with Virgin re: speed, although they do start to throttle (50% speed or so) with excessive downloading in peak hours. Off peak I nearly always hit the maximum.

If your broadband is critical to you then unfortunately you really need to be on a more expensive business package.

I assume the other providers you've mentioned would be using the Virgin infrastructure so I wonder whether they'd suffer similar outages to Virgin or if some of the equipment is different.

To be fair, I've used Virgin for the past four or five years and, in the past year, can vaguely remember maybe one outage. It's not something that happens often, possibly different streets have different connections.

With Virgin, it's luck of the draw. Some customers seem to do well; others suffer miserable service.

I don't know if other ISPs are using Virgin's infrastructure or BT's. What Virgin said to me the other day suggests that they have a separate infrastructure dedicated to the business service. Either way, like Virgin's business service, reviews suggest there are other ISPs that are much more reliable than Virgin's standard service.

I'd like to be in a position to get the same service that you do from Virgin's standard service, but they are unable to deliver a consistently good service. I get far too many periods when the service is just very patchy - going from very throttled to zero. So, sooner, rather than later, I'll just have to stump up the extra, I guess.

All. I think I asked a question a while back on a different forum about whether there is any monitoring softwear we can put on our computers so as to monitor when a service either drops out or is off line. Not sure if anyone managed to come up with any suggestions.

I have a problems at home with the internet dropping out temporarily and I never know if it is my router doing something funny or the service itself temporarily dropping. It is a complete pain and I would love to be able to monitor the service performance and possibly use it to challenge Virgin if they are at fault.

Also, it would be useful to know when my service is offline (even when I may not be actually using it at the time).

So, if anyone has any ideas as to what might be able to achieve this objective, please do let me know.

PS. I will check in with ofcom on the compensation issue I mentioned earlier and let you know what comes back from them and Virgin...
