I just completed a rare log-in to my virgin account so I could configure my email for access on multiple devices (i.e. not to delete email accessed on my iPhone before they're downloaded to my home computer). In so doing, I was offered a free upgrade to 60 MB broadband. I hadn't been offered this prior to logging on. I suspect it may have happened anyway, but just in case I've inadvertently stumbled across something useful for others, I thought I'd just share.

So this was just during the process of logging on to check how the services is working?
and after on the screen you have seen their offer?
They have to upgrade the slower customers as they decommission the equipment. Always wait for the free upgrade from Virgin :)
I recently reviewed my Virgin package Hugh and was on (I think) a large broadband package (at that time 15MB...). Anyway, I asked when we would get the much advertised doubling of our broadband speed and was told it would occur in October 2013... Not impressed so far. The guy went on to say if I amended my package in any way my broadband speed would be doubled immediately, and this was happening to anyone that changed their package in any way...
They had to send me a new router/modem- to replace the Scientific American modem I previously had.
So basically, if you do not alter your package and stick with what you have got and have had for any time you basically get upgraded when they get to your area, in this case Oct 2013 or so.
All the technicians now seem to use the BBC iPlayer's speed test checker? I clocks me in at double the speed of broadbandspeedcheker.net. I wonder which is most accurate?
I came out at 11.2 on the broadbandspeedcheker.net and 19.7 on the BBC one - neither of which are bad, considering that I'm using wifi working right at the back of the house and taking a signal from the extreme front.
Interesting. Just done this using the links you and Neil supplied and got the same result as you Hugh. Normally I use http://www.speedtest.net/ and this gave me a result consistent with the BBC checker.
As to Neil's comment, if you are on a fiber optic cable, and your computer is wired into a router I would have thought your D/L spead should hit the maximum every time. We are not having to share bandwidth anywhere are we???
If they have finally made it available to us now in this area that will be good. I have tried to get their Fibre Optic one which supposed to be one of the fastest around, but Virgin messed me up and ended up up in paying some compensation for failing to fulfill their obligation.
It is worth trying if it is free now and will be affordable there after.

I didn't get offered the free upgrade, they want me to pay £5 a month for it but they will give me a free super hub if I want to give them another £60 a year...how generous :(
Increase your speed to up to 60Mb and get a free Super Hub.
From just £5 more a month
As far as I am aware every customer is being offered a free doubling. Try again, and see if you get a different answer... Have you been on your current broadband package/ speed for long?
