Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've just taken a call from a bloke with an Indian accent, who claims to be from "UK Compensation".

There was the characteristic delay in answering, suggesting a call-centre with computer-driven dialling and likely based in India.

"How are you today?"

Me: "Why are you calling me?"

Answer "We have information here that someone on this number [my phone number] has suffered an accident in the past year and half. Is that correct?"

Me: "No"

...

I think the moral of this story is to avoid certain kinds of insurance if possible because some of it is a rip-off.

Jack Straw MP has made a number of comments in recent weeks about the unethical business practices in Motor Insurance, from amazingly high referral fees to the incredible number of whiplash injuries.

Who pays the big referral fees at the end of the day?

Yes, I have got one of these calls around once a fortnight for the last year. I used to try reasoning with them, now I just say 'NO THANKYOU" and hang up immediately.

My dad, on the other hand, has all sorts of fun at their expense, pretending the line is bad, asking them to wait on the line, asking if he called them or vice versa, etc, etc, etc.

Not necessarily via insurance co's. They just got your number from somewhere, maybe years ago.

But yes the whiplash scam/scum is what's pushed up car insurance. That and things like fancy plastic bumpers where you have to replace a whole rear end just for a little dent.

Yes, I've had one of those too. I suspect they are just cold calling numbers at random. As noted previously, you can always tell it is from an overseas call centre. I have no patience, and usually just tell them to "f*** off" and hang up.
