Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

November 2011 is an eventful month for Route 29.

1. 20th November sees its 100th anniversary.

2. 26th November sees the last bendy bus on the route (and two weeks later with the withdrawal of the buses from Route 207, the end of the bendies in London).

Thanks the lecture. As a former lecturer of 25 years, it's handy to be lectured to now and then about things I used to teach about. CLearly I have got mixed up in my dotage.

There is Democracy and democracy just as Politics and politics. I think you have blown out of proportion just about everything I said plus everyone else. I thought you were enjoying being tongue in cheek and winding us up but turns out you seriously believe that you know it all... wow.  You are not reading what people are writing very clearly for I didnt use the term mayoress....

If you would like to read something I wrote once a long time ago about democracy when I was young and idealistic, please see China's Students, the Struggle for Democracy, Routledge 1991.

*giggles with hand over mouth*

Sorry- this is my final point just to clarify my last reply was for CFowler not StephenBin.

As it's become rather personal about peoples perceived levels of intelligence and debating skills (or lack of them according to CF) and no longer about bendy buses, I will leave the discussion.

Bendy's were only 5% (399 vehicles) of the total London bus fleet anyway. Double deckers make up 63% (5104).

And now ladies & gentlemen the next Tfl project to arrive just in time for Olympics Disneyland London;

This is just a photoshop vision Matt...

Hate to be boring, but there was a 'real-life' VW Beetle underground train in Berlin in 1957. Used on an as yet un-opened line to serve the International building exhibition 'Interbau1957'.

There is a photo, but I can't give you a direct link

sehr gut ... verrückt!

OK, Mister Clever with your clever statistics: what kind of buses are the remaining 32% of London buses?  Perhaps you can let us have a detailed breakdown, and maybe add one by manufacturer, type, model number? Perhaps you can tell us how many of the drivers are men and how many women (or would that be "driveresses", Ruth?)? And I expect Ruth would like you to tell her why the drivers (and driveresses) are not democratically elected.

Single-deckers (non bendy ) ?

Double deckers get crammed because it's not worth going upstairs for short journeys, and as for those **%^&*^ 4x4 buggies... Bendies can carry an extrra 20 (?) people. But they must have lost a fortune in fares, I reckon 10% paid.

Boris vanity project for sure. Are the new ones proof against fare dodgers?

I quite like the look of the VW tube, nice.

Bendies could carry more people maybe but in less comfort. As for going upstairs, its good exercise going up surely and avoiding the crush. And short journeys aren't economical with flat fare pricing. Better to walk. Come Jan there will be more of walking further I reckon so bendies and routemaster debate might be irrelevant!!

No, conductors could have been used on the Bendy buses too!

I accept that maybe the 29 (as it currently runs) isn't the ideal route for such buses  (too many long riders) and most of the routes chosen to run them fall into that category. But there are certainly current routes or even routes to be introduced on which they would have been useful.

I've said it before - it's amazing how many women say they will miss them.. and how many men (mostly owners of penis-extension BMWs) hate them..

I personally see the removal as a political statement - No 'nasty' European buses on London's streets! - pathetic!

Oh dear, you don't like people taking baby buggies on buses. Well, perhaps babies should be banned from all public transport until they are old enough to walk unassisted? Perhaps you'd like to ban people in wheelchairs too? Or all those awful people with walking sticks or crutches who take up too much room? And since you're so concerned about "fare dodgers" and people not paying, perhaps all those over-60s who have Freedom Passes should be banned too? We are all _so sorry_ to take up room on _your_ buses!

You reckon "10% paid". Have you ever even been on a bendy bus? Have you bothered to look how many people "touch in"? I travel on the buses a lot, and my observation is that it is very rare for people not to "touch in" and pay.

You really do seem to have a bit of a thing about people not paying to use _your_ buses. Perhaps you'd like to see all fare dodgers shot?
