Tottenham mobilising against betting shop saturation
The proposal by Paddy Power to take over independent record shop premises Every Bodies Music seems to be the straw that broke the camel's back in Tottenham. Residents have had enough and a mass rally is planned outside the shop on the corner of West Green Road and Tottenham High Road to protest at betting shop saturation from 12 - 3 this Saturday.
Perhaps a few of those folks complaining about residents lack of action on Green Lanes could find the time to lend their support to this?

I don't see how they can stop PP if it goes through the courts but at least they ain't taking it lying down! Of course, I'm bearing in mind of course, the hours of work you, Ian and others in the community put into fighting Metrobet through the system and the time taken by folks to fight Agora through the planning system.
However, a few people argued that there should be a physical protest against betting shops and I'm suggesting that they might want to lend support to this is they feel that it would help. Perhaps if lots of communities across the country staged mass protest, the law could be amended to make it easier to oppose a betting shop on the grounds of saturation...I'll go back to cloud cuckoo land now, shall I?

Never say never. Just flying a kite that their action may have the desired impact, then I'd feel we could have done more - all of us, residents, residents' assocs, traders' assocs, councillors and MP.

There is a major difference with this application to the ones in Green Lanes, because if the Inspector gives the go-ahead, he will in effect be allowing an A1 class business (retail) to be replaced by an A2 business class (betting shop).
If that is the case, a precedent will have been set, and no planning consent would be necessary for any high street business to be converted to a betting shop.
"Lammy Landmarks" will be sprouting up everywhere - Vegas here we come!

Thanks for pointing that out. (You mean I can lay off on the self-flagellation for a while yet the). What was the situation with Agora, 48 Grand Parade Peter. Was that already A2 also? I don't remember.

Formerly, 48 Grand Parade was used for council offices (A2) with some Unison operations going on upstairs. It was also used by Harringay and (I think) St Ann's councillors for their surgeries.
When it was closed, the LCSP canvassed unsuccessfully for it to become the SNT office for the Harringay & St. Ann's teams (in the heart of Green Lanes).
I've always thought that Agora was a poor substitute.
As previously stated, all the "Lammy Landmarks" along Green Lanes were already designated A2 use before the gambling operations commenced. - Attachments:

Good on you Liz for highlighting this.
I have been a small part of the campaign that is being led by Tottenham community champion Douglas Williams. The central point for information about this can be found here (a Yahoo Group).
I hope this groundswell will mark the turning of the tide against the "Lammy Landmarks". The MP for Tottenham, David Lammy was silent at the time his government passed their pernicious Gambling Act (2005) and since then, has responded in a limited way to complaints from his constituents.
At election time, Mr Lammy tried to pass himself off as some kind of local community activist – instead of a senior member of the Government that promoted and passed the Gambling Act, from which stems betting shop proliferation. Some people have called this a fraud and a deception.
I recognise that he asked a question of Dave in PMQ's a few weeks ago but since the election he has been heard not often on this subject.
Betting shops prey on the poor. The only way the rising tide will be rolled back is by severe amendment or the wholesale abolition, of New Labour's Gambling Act.
I will be there on Saturday in a hope of raising awareness and I hope others will too.

Why do you have to go through the FOI route to obtain this information, why is it not published as a matter of course on the dat.gov.uk site? Making this type of data available to all allows proper accountablity, piecemeal FOI trawling provides a shield to disguise the true current picture.
