'Nuits blanches', or 'light nights' started in Paris in 1997. They are annual all-night or night-time arts festivals when museums, private and public art galleries, and other cultural institutions open and free of charge, with the centre of the city itself being turned into a de facto art gallery, providing space for art installations, performances (music, film, dance, performance art), themed social gatherings, and other activities.
They're held in an increasing number of cities around the world including Paris, Berlin and Toronto. Here's New York:

Lots of the musuems do fairly regular late night openings in London - and they generally have music and stuff on as well (or candle lit tours which sound fab!). I've put the link below to the Time Out webpage which covers lots of them.
