The Long View: Was there ever a golden age for retirement?

As people may have guessed I am very fond of History be it local, national or global. I find it interesting to note how notions of a 'golden past' are invoked in order to suggest a dysfunctional present.

So I was interested to read this article about retirement which suggests, that while "recent decades may have been a golden period for a lucky, mostly male, minority, the majority, however, have not benefited."
