I was over Hornsey way earlier doing a couple of extra video interviews this afternoon. Having a half hour to spare between interviews I popped in to the one month old eatery, The Haberdashery, on the Crouch End end of Middle, a few doors down from the wood store.
It seems to be closer to a cafe than anything else, though they do proper meals at lunchtime and in the evenings on Friday & Saturday. They also have a full licence to sell alcohol. A bit of category defying place really.
I was with cameraman John and we just ordered cake and a coffee. Yummy coffee. John ordered a cappuccino, I think, and his came in un bol. Nice touch; boy was I jealous! Given today's nice weather, we were able to enjoy sitting out in their nice little garden out back.
What impressed me more than anything was the palpable and genuine friendliness of the place. It's run by the affable Philadelphian and escapee management consultant Greg. He's helped out by the friendly Helen whose Cardiff-Belfast accent had me foxed. Even Stan and Francesco in the kitchen came up trumps with the smiles. I felt like I'd walked down the Yellow Brick Road and into Oz.
When I asked Greg what his concept for The Haberdashery is, he told me that he just wanted to create the sort of place he'd want to come to. I guess a big part of that then is creating a warm and welcoming environment. Additional good vibes are added by the original Ztuffhe has around the main part of the shop.
A HoL thumbs up. Worth a try. Please come back and tell us what the food is like.

This place is a lot more than just an award-winning coffee shop - they've created a good atmosphere for local people and are fast defining their own version of Crouch End. They support us by putting on live music events, a community bazaar, acting as a distribution centre for Community Supported Agriculture, mounting art exhibitions and festivals and raising money for the community.
If this website was a cafe, it would be as good as Haberdashery, if not better.
I agree with James that it's not the cheapest (that would probably be the local Weatherspoons) and have no personal interest as I'm an older guy but it's not just another business, it's a place worth networking in and supporting, particularly if you're in the main Crouch End demographic, whatever you consider that to be..
