Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
The fish shop on Seymour Road
Has anyone shopped there and lived to tell the tale? I walk past it every day, but I have never been in, purely because IT STINKS. And fresh fish does not smell.
The smell is probably not helped by the fact that their rubbish is placed in black bags a bit further down by Zam's Chicken, and they clean the floor and chuck the fishy water out on to the pavement. I am hoping for another cool summer, I can only imagine what it will smell like in the heat..
Anyone actually been in there? I never see any customers.

I live on Seymour Road and must agree that it stinks! They have also recently taken to putting tacky badly written signs on the side off buildings and on the back of cars!! As soon as the temperature goes up the smell gets worse. Taking my daughter to school each day is a choice between either dog poo alley or fish smells and chicken bones! Personally I don't eat fish - if I did I certainly would not buy it there.
However, interesting to hear that Liz uses it. I too have never seen anyone actually in the shop.

Sorry Liz - maybe my reply was slightly too harsh. My main concern is regarding the smell, rubbish and signs. I have contacted the council on numerous occasions regarding the rubbish at the bottom of the road. At least it gives us something to look at on the way to school - the man in the shop must find us very strange, we are always looking in the window and discussing the fish - but never go in and buy them,

Hi Liz, that's reassuring. I might reconsider, but I have to say the smell does really put me off.
I completely agree with Martha re. the smell and the tacky signs. And I will call environmental health, as a fish shop should really not stink that much if they're doing things the right way. Might actually be doing them a favour, if they can curb the smell more people might actually shop there..

Two distinct views on this. Once friend shops there fairly frequently and rates the place.
On the other hand, another friend was sick after eating something he'd bought from there. Whether he'd actually cooked the thing properly is another matter, mind...
Have yet to try it myself.

we buy fish from there from time to time. i dont like the smell of any fish shp, fresh fish DOES stink - it is fish after all. I have seen them thoroughly cleaning the place every evening which is a positive, and they seem like nice people. never had any food poisoning after consuming our purchases either.

I buy my fish from there nearly every week . I always pick the freshest looking fish and never had any problems. The fish is always cleaned really well and the owner is really nice. I walk past the shop every day but the smell doesn't bother me - maybe because I love fish. But I agree that the signes are a bit tacky.

I have bought fish and shellfish from there on average once a week since I moved to the area and the food has never been anything other than delicious. The smell, I believe, comes from the dirty water that ends up out on the pavement rather than the produce itself. They clean the floor with a hose, which explains why the pavement is so wet but suggests they are serious about hygiene.
A lot of their trade is done at odd hours and to restaurants, which probably explains why it is often empty. Also, I guess it's not the easiest place to spot from Green Lanes (hence the shoddy new signs which I agree aren't the prettiest).
The owner and his staff have never been anything less than courteous and kind to me and the other people I have bumped into there.
Maybe try something from there (it's not expensive and there's plenty of frozen fish to choose from if the fresh stuff doesn't appeal!) and see if it improves your opinion of the place...

I have bought plenty of fish from there too. It has always been fine. The more fish they sell, the fresher it will be.
If we want a more diverse range of local shops we have to be prepared to support them.

I walked past this morning, and it stank again. I can't buy anything from a place that stinks to high heaven, I really can't. This is one local shop I won't be supporting. Not until they sort the smell out and I am convinced it's not as dodgy as the signs and smell suggests. Sorry folks, not convinced. But that's my perogative I suppose.

I must say, (as I didnt earlier) that I think it is rather harsh to start a thread about an independent shop - and to give them bad publicity when you have never even shopped there before. They are honest people trying to make a decent living. I hope it doesnt become common place for individual shops to be picked out and given negative press on this forum, because that is poor form.
I dont mean to cause offence to anyone, but it has to be said.
